Hi y'all,
I'm a Brooklynite for the past two years. I've been a casual rider my whole life but lately have become a tad gung-ho. I hate exercise for its own sake, so this suits me.
I got my first NYC bike in the summer of '03. It was a beater to beat all beaters and was stolen within ten days. Bad lock/luck. I got another one this summer, another beater, and it lasted a few months. It got nabbed from in front of my buidling--I couldn't bring a bike inside in my last apartment, no room. This fall my pal nycm'er gave me a better road bike, less than ten years old, no rust. I got addicted. Soon I bought a better bike (I moved down the block and can keep them inside). Now I have a fixed gear which I love for general city riding and a geared bike with fenders which I intend to use for touring and here on rainy days. Unfortunately, the NYPD has custody of the fendered bike since Critical Mass last weekend in Manhattan--I'll get it back though.
Anyway, glad this site exists. I have lots of questions.

Hello New Yorker’s and Brooklynites,
I live in Atlanta and will be going to NYC for the Five Boro Bike Ride on May 1st and will be staying in NYC for a week. I want to spend most of my time on a bike touring the city and want to know if this is crazy. A friend of mine drove a cab while at NYU and says that the drivers in the NYC are better drivers and more courteous than drivers in Atlanta. I have seen the bike maps published by the City of NY and there looks like there are some good routes. I am not really interested in the sites usually visited by tourists and just really want to visit the neighborhoods and see how people live day to day. I usually ride 150 miles a week so most distances are not a problem. My biggest concerns are theft of my bike (an old Hibred) and traffic. Any advise or comments?

If you're comfortable with riding in traffic on varied surface over distance you should have no problem.
Just about anywhere in the city you can go with a bike...even the subway.
I wouldn't exactly call drivers here "more courteous"..don't give em that much credit.
Same with leaving the bike locked up...be smart and you should be just fine.
Be open and talk to the local riders you meet on the road.
