Newbie looking for folder advice

Hi all,

I have owned a mountain bike for years and really enjoy riding. I just moved outside Manhattan and now have a much longer commute. I am thinking of bringing a folding bike onto the LIRR and ride from Penn Station down to my office in Soho. My budget is flexible but probably on the low- to mid-range. Ideally something safe/sturdy and fairly compact; gears and speed aren't that important to me.

Location: Queens/Manhattan
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 135lbs

Thanks for any advice!

Carrie

1--Welcome to BF! 2--You might reach a wider audience with your question about folders if you re-ask it in the Folding Bike forum. Do some research there and talk with those folks and you'll be on your way. 3--Penn Station to SoHo… You're braver than me! I'm a NYC expat who migrated upstate many years ago and these days I view cycling in busy, traffic-intensive areas of the city as bordering on suicidal. Best of luck with it.

I know, right?! I used to ride from Williamsburg, Brooklyn to NYU back in the day. Not sure if it's still in the cards for me (I'm 10 years older!) but the commute -- three changes in trains -- is driving me crazy.

If the area is as bad as you say I wouldn't ride anything nice, new and shiney whatever the bike cost.

If the ride is not too hilly and you want something sturdy, why not look out for something old with the scratches and the odd bit of rust.

Maybe an old Raleigh Twenty Stowaway or one of its many clones, you'll get a three speed hub too which will last for ever.
