Old Guy, but in fairly decent shape (I think), just getting back into biking. Have been riding recently with my 46 yo son on his spare mountain bike. Mostly roads, paved bike trails, and few dirt/rock trails. Didn't really like the trails with a lot of rocks/roots so just ordered a Trek 8.6DS with intend of also doing some light off road trails. Just signed up here to hopefully get some info. on upgrades for the bike, like seat and pedals, and recommendations for a computer. With this type of bike is a computer with cadence overkill? I was looking on line and saw the Sigma BC 16.12 STS Cadence Double Wireless that looked like it had a lot of functions and is on sale with $29 off MSRP. With Black Friday coming up there should be some sales on accessories so wanted to start looking for upgrades.

Bike computers come in handy and I have had one for many years. I used to pay attention to cadence but now I just look at it while I ride to be sure I am in a range I think is appropriate for the route and terrain. The pro's really use this but I think you could live without it but I wouldn't pend extra to get. I use a Garmin Edge 510 but I want to record the road routes I ride. 10 Wheels is correct about the upgrades: wait until you ride what comes with the bike and then decide what you might want to upgrade.

Cyber Monday should be good for cyclists. Look to Pricepoint, blueskycycling, nashbar and others for really good deals. I am a cheap freak.

I just rode a Century on skinny tires with my daughter and son in law. I enjoyed them immensely.

Welcome to BF! Just a personal, thought, but… If you’re just re-entering cycling, don’t go tech-nuts right from the start. Get back into cycling at your own pace and if you end up “really” getting into it, get as tech-intensive as your riding style and preferences dictate when you get to whatever level you get to by next June (just to pick a date). The odds (if you’re not going to be an amateur racer) are you won’t need all the fancy tech gear and measurement devices that bicycle racing wannabes need to pursue their hoped-for careers. Just get a nice, comfortable bike, enjoy riding it and don’t forget to smell the flowers and enjoy the sunny days and scenic views along the way.

Thanks for the reply, haven't heard from the store that the new bike has arrived as of today so will have to check on it. Was really planning on riding before upgrades but just thought with Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales might have been able to get some good deals on upgrades plus the bike store is giving me 15% off on accessories with the bike purchase. Had a nice 16 mile ride yesterday with my son along the San Antonio, TX. riverwalk that included two of the old Spanish Missions.
