Greetings! After lurking and gaining a lot of insight on what I wanted to do, I've decided to join the ranks here and say hello. A little about me...I'm an avid golfer, and used-to-be runner who's right knee has decided that it simply can't take the pounding of running any longer. Of course, I discovered this early last year, and decided I'd just eat healthier and maintain my weight without running.
Yeah...not so much. I've always been around 220ish, and I'm 6'1" so I've always considered myself to be on the upper end of in shape, but felt good. After not running this past summer, I woke up 2 weeks ago as heavy as I've ever been, at 249. I will NOT hit 250. So I started doing research about getting back into cycling, something I did a lot when I was in my 20's. I test rode a ton of bikes, everything from felt to trek and fuji to scott. After a lot of soul (and wallet) searching, I decided that I was going to do it right, and bought the bike that felt the best rather than skimping. I just got a recent promotion, and while it's not a lot more money, it'll pay for the bike.
I got a quick 3 mile ride in today because it was in the low 50's, and I'm in love. I'll likely spend most of the next 2 months on the trainer, but hey...I'll take it. So Hi everyone!
Oh...this is the new baby. A Scott CR1 comp that puts me in a great position, not too aggressive, not too upright. Light, and really comfortable on the road. (buying it about 60% of retail because a local shop isn't carrying Scott any more was a big reason I decided on it. It only ran me about $150 over Tiagra equipped aluminum bikes with carbon forks.)

Thanks gang! The trainer is a cycleops Mag that I ended up with from a friend. I'ts definitely not as high tech as some of the newer ones, but for being a couple years old it'll do.
I have gear to ride all day in the 50's, but now that it's back into the 20's things get a little trickier. That whole skinny tire/ice thing is a bad mix for me.

Wow, your baby is nice!! Looks like you are on the road to losing weight though, good luck with that. Cycling can be very addictive, you'll find that out. Just glad that you decided on something that will be easier on your knee, you don't want to retire not being able to walk without pain.

That XboxOne is going to make you a couch potato. Especially if you have Battlefield 4 or are a Call of Duty fanboy like me! But I'm 19, 5'5" and 120 pounds so I need to gain weight! But cycling has become my all time hobby and drug. Nice bike digitalbroccoli and good luck man!!

I hope your timeline goes something like mine: minus the crappy Next and mid range Novara bikes, you have avoided that mistake.
Dec. 2005: A week after my 43 birthday I found myself weighing 240lbs and had to do something.
I went to the gym and by May of '06 had dropped 55lbs.
May 2006: Got a $75 Walmart Next bike and fell in love with riding it.
Sept 2006: got a Novara hybrid and did my first Metric and first Century.
December 2006:Got my first real road bike, a Felt F75. The adventure continues...
May 2012, Tally to date: 38 Centuries, and 12 Double Centuries. The Felt F75 is still going strong and so far, so am I.
April 2013: After 13 Double Centuries and More Centuries than I can count...
The Felt F75 has been retired. 30,000 miles is a lot for an entry level road bike.
Now on: Specialized Roubaix SL4 Expert Ui2. Onward
January 2014: There are already 4,500 miles on my new Roubaix

Protect you knee by not mashing your pedals and insuring proper alignment of your feet and knees...
Hope to see posts of all the fun your having...
