Back On The Saddle Again

i'm old and overweight, battle with bipolar and need to become physically active to help me with each of those adjectives that describe life as i know it today. come tomorrow or a tad down the road, i'd like to attribute part of my transformation/rebirth to getting back on two wheels after an all-too long layoff.

i have loved bicycling since my dad taught me how to balance on two balloon tires connected by a fendered frame. At that time, my age was still a single digit. between then and up until three or four years ago, i spent time riding for good causes and riding for fun. i spent part of my summers growing up going on bicycle trips with the camp i attended - even rode my bicycle from close to west lafayette, ind., all the way to mackinac island in michigan. as i grew older, weekends were spent on casual rides sponsored by local festivals and solo jaunts through the countryside close to home. i even won a few "races" in a double-digit age bracket held in conjuction with corporate challenges. i loved bicycling so much that one saturday morning, scheduled to work, i decided to ride my bicycle an easy 20-miles. unfortunately, a crash ended that trek.

but as i grew older, full-on participation in activities such as bicycling, tennis, golf and racquetball dwindled down to zero participation. when i tried picking my bicycling back up a few years ago, i didn't realize a medication i was taking at the time to help combat my mental illness had affected my balance. i couldn't figure out why i couldn't turn corners well or keep the tires on the sidewalk. then, on one short ride, i ended up flying over the handlebars and landing hard on my right shoulder.

i quit before i really had a chance to get started.

when i grew determined once again two summers ago to ride, one trip out and i realized i was too fat and out of shape to go very far. and because i had become easily frustrated for a number reasons (none really good ones, looking back), i quit. gave up.

life has gone on and with more than five decades in the vault, there have been ups and downs, significant losses and devastating events.

and i miss bicycling. i still own two fujis - one a tour bike and the other, a bike for riding around town. both have been well maintained. as i searched for ways to help me get back on the saddle in a safe and healthy way, i stumbled across this forum. one thread popped up and caught my eye in regard to someone who hadn't ridden a bike for more than 15 years. that's why i've signed up for this forum.

Cheers and welcome. Hopefully Forums help you put your Fujis to good use!
To err is human. To moo is bovine.

Who is this General Failure anyway, and why is he reading my drive?
