Hello from NYC

Hi there!

My bikes that are running:
1984 Trek 720
1965 Rudge De-luxe
1986 Univega Gran Sprint

My cycling, and not cycling-related instagram: @kevincmcd

Current projects I need help with:
1. Storage. No more bike room in the place we're moving to. Considering homemade 2x4 w hooks. Never done this before.

2. New wheel build for my Trek. WTB never-laced 27" rims. 36 hole, double-walled, eyelets. Already have Phil Wood hubs, Sugino 888 freewheel. This will replace problem-ridden Helicomatic rear hub that is original to the bike.

3. Servicing help for dynohub or advice on building up a new front wheel with generator for my Rudge 3-speed commuter. The Sturmey Archer Dynohub generates electricity fine, but it has loosened up a bit over the years and won't run perfectly true anymore. I've had a few mechanics look at it but no one wants to really get into it. Who has a keeper magnet these days or knows how to service these? Is it worth pursuing? I love this bike, rely on it, ride it every day. Lighting system is 6V 1.8W with LEDs and limiter from reflectalite.com.

4. Help getting started racing in NYC. I've spoken to a bunch of people who race and get mixed advice on whether I need a proper racing bike vs getting started on my Univega. I need a buddy to help me get started, people to go on training rides with.

Any links to forums discussions, help posting WTB, or specific advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

Welcome to BF! On your storage quandary, take a look at the Delta Botticelli indoor storage rack. I deal with limited available indoor space and this one serves me well by storing 4 bikes inside a ~3’x6’ area. It’s not the heaviest construction that ever was, but I find it adequate and worth the price. It probably wouldn’t do well with a 30 pound downhill bomber hung on the upper level, but that’s OK with me.

Welcome to BF!

I bought a universal bike hanger from Home Depot and put my bikes high on the wall in my NYC apartment. There is a cool and informative race crowd around too. Look into New York Cycle Club. Lots of rides, racing and general debauchery.

Not sure which one you mean thatcycleguy. "Monkey Bar"?
Thanks for NYCC recommend.

Thanks Lacumo. i have a large wall space but narrow floor space - beside the stairs in a brownstone. I think only single file solution would work, but 3 x 6 seems small indeed. I'll measure it out.
