Hello from student looking to buy

Hi,

I joined because I've recently entered the market for a bike. I'm a grad student in the midwest looking for something mainly for transportation (to/from school, grocery store, etc. etc.).

I don't know much about bikes honestly - I had a few as a kid but never seriously rode. I tried a Schwinn recently but didn't buy it cause it was too expensive (at least I thought so), and then I realized I may not know enough to be able to evaluate bikes properly.

What would you recommend for a grad student on a budget? I was hoping to spend 50-60 (up to 75 if the bike warrants it) on a used bike. Nothing too fancy, but preferably not a department store model, since I've heard bad stories about those.

That's what I've been doing for the past week or so. I'm just curious which brands are good for someone in my situation (like, I've been told to avoid Huffy), and how much I should try to negotiate down from the listed prices.

Welcome to the Forums

Aside from checking CL, you can ask your University if they have any unclaimed bikes in their lost and found, see if there are any bike kitchens/co-ops in your area, or see if there are any bike shops that has rentals and try and buy one of their older units that is ready to retire.
