Bikes on Trains Zealot Looking for Information!!

Hello,

I am in the initial phases of organizing an effort in the Omaha/Lincoln Nebraska area and beyond to get roll-on/roll-off service on Amtrak's California Zephyr. Efforts like this are going on in lots of other places around the country, but not here. And I can personally vouch that Amtrak had committed to doing this 21 years ago (before my middle son David was born) but they never have actually done ANYTHING. Now that I've raised all my kids, I have time to take up a cause or two, and this is one of them.

So where on this forum are "bikes on trains" discussed? And I have had no luck in actually finding the companies who manufacturer the type of hooks and racks that would be put on a train. Can anyone help me out on these subjects? Thanks.

Welcome aboard :)

Well, I think that either Advocacy & Safety or, oddly enough, Living Car Free would probably be the best places. I'd try LCF first, though.

Have you gotten in touch with either the League of Amer. Bicyclists or Adventure Cycling? Both organizations have been asking Amtrak for improved bike facilities for many years:

Since this is a nationwide issue I'd think that working through such organizations would be the most likely route for success.

Part of the issue with Amtrak is that they have inconsistent equipment and rules on their various routes. Locally the Capitol Corridor and San Joaquin routes are excellent with roll-on service for bicyclists and hooks for storing your bike toward the end of each car. OTOH, the Coast Starlight and Calif. Zephyr require that bikes be boxed and you can only go between the subset of stations that offer checked baggage service.

Welcome to BF and good luck with your AMTRAK cause! They’re genuinely inhospitable toward bicycles in their NE Corridor and they could definitely use an attitudinal tune-up.
