Getting Back into Biking

Other than the usual growing up with bikes, I commuted years ago on a Motobecane. I probably couldn't afford that one today. I am trying to decide what to get. To do it right I suppose it would have to be a Raleigh as that's the only shop here, or get a used bike there. On line I am interested in the Kettler Big Jumper. Looking for one under a thousand. Are the Smith Wessons any good? They are priced right. I will be biking locally although I would like it good for trekking in the event I do that.

Raleigh is a decent brand but if there is only one bike shop in your area and they only sell Raleigh, you can't make a good comparison. :(

Kessler and Raleigh are out. Good prices from Bikes Direct. Several Motobecanes but limited as to sizing. I have rode bikes too big and they were not a real problem. Anyone have that experience? How does Dura Ace compare to Ultegra?
