Huffy Maxx Trail Mountain Bike
Hi! I'm new to Bike Forums. I live in New England and own a 21 speed Huffy Maxx Mountain Bike. It has an aluminum frame and is completely stock (with the exception of a headlight & water bottle). I purchased it at a Service Merchandise store back in 1998. I ride it daily & enjoy it very much. I was wondering if anybody has any information about this model Huffy. I also still own my high school graduation present (1974) - a Sutton Super 10 Racer, although the Sutton is 40 years old I still ride it regularly. See photos of Huffy & Sutton Super 10. Thanks - jdiggitydawg

I'm just looking for any information about this particular model folks might have (when they were manufactured, MSRP, where they were sold, etc.). I haven't found any information about this model Huffy online. As I recall, it was fairly expensive (especially for a Huffy) but I purchased it during a clearance sale. It's the only Huffy I've ever seen like it & my cousin who owns a bike shop (Schwinn & Raleigh) initially laughed when he heard I had purchased a Huffy but when he saw it he was surprised at how nice the bike actually is. If anybody knows more about this model Huffy or has owned one, I'd love to find out more about it. Thanks Again - Jdiggitydawg

Yeah, definitely a high end dept. store bike. Unfortunately it's tough to find good info even on recent dept. store bikes.
I'd wild guess MSRP around $279. Probably one of the last years for Ballistic forks. I'd probably ditch the steel barends and get some longer grips if it was mine.
Interesting that the frame is set up for both cantilever and vee brakes. Mainstream Vbrake use hit about 1996-1997.

Thanks for the information. I can't remember the exact price the Huffy was marked down from, I think it might have been $299 or possibly $349. I purchased it in 1998, so it probably was built between 1996-1998.
I remember the other bikes I looked at were priced around $100, so this one really stood out with the aluminum frame, ballistic fork & bar-ends. It was marked down on clearance and I believe I paid $150 or $175 (it was priced 50% off). I remember that although it came fully assembled at the store, the first thing I did was take it to an established bicycle shop in Cambridge or Somerville, MA and had it set-up correctly. When I moved back to my hometown a few years later I took it to my cousin's bike shop and had him give it a once over to make sure everything was right. He deals in Schwinns & Raleighs, and he was surprised that Huffy made such a nice mountain bike. I really enjoy it & ride it almost every day weather permitting. Growing up I never could afford a Schwinn or a Raleigh and I never had a problem with Huffys. My first "more expensive" bike was a Le Super 10 speed racer that I purchased from his shop when his dad still ran it. I sold the Le Super when I was buying my first car, but received the Sutton Super 10 as a high school graduation present a couple years later. I graduated 40 years ago, and I'm still riding the Sutton. I'm glad I found this forum as I really enjoy riding & discussing bicycles.
