New guy in Houston

Just joined today after lurking for a few days. I'm 56 and looking to start doing some light recreational cycling. I'm starting to feel my age and want to get back into shape. I will be riding casually with my wife on weekends, and eventually may do some more serious riding alone for exercise. Looking to pick up a mid-range hybrid or flat bar road bike. Need to do more research and start some test drives. I came here to look for opinions and reviews of some of the bikes I've been looking at on CL and at local shops.

Other interests include golf, Houston team sports, music, boating, motorcycling and family to name a few. And I love participating in Forums. I have at least one for most everything I'm interested in.

David in Houston.

Hey David,

Welcome to Bike Forums from League City

I will second the welcome, also from League City.

There are plenty of clubs around town that you can take part in for group rides if that interests you.

Welcome to BF. I ride up around Kingwood and points east and north. Enjoy your time riding with your wife.

Thanks to everyone for the kind welcome!

texbiker, I too am in the Kingwood area, or just a bit south near 1960. Do you ride on the streets, or are there dedicated bike trails in the area? I've been asked if I will be riding mostly pavement or off road trails, and I'm not sure of the answer yet. It depends on what's available, and I currently have no clue. Can you suggest any online resources to locate places to ride, or should I just locate local riders and ask them?

Thanks!

I ride mostly on the roads. You can see where I ride and some comments at Texbiker.net. Kingwood has greenbelt trails, about 70 miles of them. They are paved concrete or asphalt for the older ones. In the coming years the City of Houston will be building trails under the CenterPoint transmission lines. Those may be paved but I have not seen anything specific. My website has information about rides and places to ride.

Thanks! Looks like I found the right person to ask that question! Nice website. Your ride today brought you within a few blocks of my place in Walden.

So is it okay to ride on the Kingwood trails? My wife and I walk up there a lot. Kids, dogs, twists and turns. I guess as long as you stay under control.

The trails have walkers, joggers and bikers. Some places have more traffic than others. The closer you are to places that attract people (stores, pools, etc.) the traffic increases. I ride on them sometimes on my MTB. Time of day also has different number of people. This link shows the greenbelts:
