Hi from Fort Lauderdale
Just ordered my first bike. It arrives next week (though I'm not sure if I got the right kind of bike for my purposes and will be asking here... either in the Recreational Cyclocross or the Hybrid section). I'll also be asking for advice about modifying the handlebars and the gears (and if "gears" is even the right term -- did I mention this is my first bike?).
What I ordered is a Fuji Cross 1.3 Disc 2015.
Thanks in advance for the help I'll be getting here!

welcome to BF, nice fuji and a good choice assuming your type of riding will be hard packed dirt fire roads with moderate hills or even some mild forest trails. Have fun, equipment is only part of it.
As far as modifications you may want to try and figure out what your "finished product" will be, whats your Ideal bike setup. I say this because you very well may spend more cash doing your upgrades when it would have made more sense to return this bike and get something different. IE> if you want a bike for commuting the 10 miles to work and planned on changing the knobby tires, flat handlebars, and shifters to something more road friendly then you fit my scenario. Many people have made this mistake. Most commonly people buy an "upright comfortable hybrid" and then replace it with a proper road bike just a year later.
