Hello from Toronto

Hi there everyone,

I got back into cycling in the summer of 2009 when I purchased an ancient 10 speed with what had to be the world's heaviest rims. It felt like it took forever to get up to speed, but it did get me around a lot faster than walking. It was a great re-entry to cycling, but it made me realize how much I needed a newer, nicer bike.

I picked up a 59cm 2009 Jamis Sputnik later that summer, and totally loved that bike. I rode 16km to work daily until the winter made it really unpleasant. Unfortunately my Sputnik was stolen eventually, but I was delighted to find another 59cm 2009 Sputnik frame a little while ago which I am slowly building up. In addition I have a 2014 Marinoni Pista. I was out shopping for a wheelset, but once I locked eyes with the Pista, it was all over- I just couldn't resist the fact that it was hand made in Canada with Columbus Zona tubing and a fantastic paint job; I bought the Pista two days later. It has mediocre parts on it, so many of them will probably end up being donors to the Sputnik frame.

I'm 40 years old, and ride to work and into downtown Toronto regularly. It's such a pleasure to be on a bike in this city- traffic sucks really bad and parking is ridiculously scarce and expensive. I live within five miles of my workplace, and biking is such a nice start to the day. I live just east of the downtown core, and can bike to most interesting places in the city inside of 25 minutes.

Eventually I will probably man up and get some kind of geared bicycle. I love riding, but I'm terrible at servicing and maintenance, but plan to take a course soon. I need to know the basics!

Hi TDogg,

Welcome to Bike Forum. What is it like biking around on the streets in Canada's biggest city? Driven through the city but have never considered biking. Driving in Toronto is stressful enough I can't imagine being on a bike on those city streets.
