Hello from Vancouver!

I just got back into cycling this year after a few years of being dormant, and I must say, its good to be back on the road! Vancouver may be rainy and hilly but a little water won't stop me and what goes up must go down!

I commute from my home in Surrey to school in downtown Vancouver 3 times a week (30 km each way) and my bike sure feels it, it seems like its in the shop at least twice a month for one thing or another. This forum looks like a good place to get great maintenance tips to keep a starving student's costs down. I look forward to being part of the conversations!

Hi there!

Name's Jack, and I'm cycling across the country next year. I'll be in Vancouver, hopefully, by August/September of next year! Maybe you can show me around, I've heard Vancouver's a great city.

Hi VancityCyclist, and welcome to the community! You may be interested in the Commuting Forum and the Bicycle Mechanics forums (two of our busiest communities) to ask questions, and add your expertise! Again, welcome.

Vancouver is an absolutely beautiful city and July/August is the best time to be here! There are some awesome bike routes throughout the area; some well known, others, not so much. I'd love to show you around!

@tractorlegs Thanks for pointing these out! It was actually the commuting forum that prompted me to join, there's some neat discussions in there. I can see the Bike Mechanics forum becoming a permanent bookmark, 265 pounds puts a lot of strain on, well, everything...

Tell me about it. I was 308 pounds three years ago, am currently at 230. Secret? Commuting.

It really does wonders, at the beginning of the year I was up over 300 as well. They really should advertise cycle commuting as a weight loss regime. Its fun, its easy, and it doesn't take near as much time out of your day as going to the gym!

Welcome, that is a long commute. Which route into Vancouver do you use?

Certainly join the discussions in the commuter forum and the mechanics forum; you will pick up tidbits and personal fix it information. There are several regular Vancouverites in there.

Welcome and enjoy the rain!

I usually go via the Patullo bridge and then through north Burnaby along the central valley Greenway. Nice route, beautiful scenery and not too many hills. When I'm feeling really ambitious I'll go over the Alex Fraser (I love that bridge!!) and then along marine drive around UBC. Glad to see some fellow Vancouverites here!

Hey VancityCyclist,

Welcome to Bike Forum. That is one serious commute you do from Surrey into Vancouver. What is it like going over the Patullo or Alex Fraser bridge? Must be challenging and stressfull!!
