A Chicago area Clydesdale

Hi Everyone!

I bought my first road bike in 1983 at 19 years old as a means to get around as well as to keep fit because I HATE running! I rode my Peugeot for years then marriage, children and life took over. I still have the Peugeot and every season I say I'm going to get it up and running again. Sadly, I don't think that is going to happen . Here is a pic of it I took yesterday...

with the thoughts of putting it up for sale on Craigslist so I can have some funds to fix up a bike I found that someone had put out in their trash! A 1991 Schwinn Crosscut.

With winter quickly approaching, it will be my winter project to get the Crosscut up and running. Funds may be limited due to being out of a job since July but I can still learn to take this baby apart, give it a thorough cleaning, lubing, and tuneup to be ready to roll come spring time.

I am 6'2" and weigh 270# but still play basketball 1 to 2 times a week and try to do yoga 2 - 3 times a week. Need to start working on my food intake to get down to my first goal of 220# by this time next year.

Looking forward to utilizing the knowledge base here on the forum as well as all of the support I have read here already to get me to my goal.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

Welcome to Bikeforums. I'm a couple of inches shorter and I also live in Chicago. What does the crosscut need?

Hi Barrettscv, on first look, true wheels, new tubes and all new cables. I haven't done any real bicycle repair or maintenance before other than changing out flats so I figure I should also clean and re-lube everything too while I have some time this winter.

Welcome Skoony- I really hope you rethink about the Pug. Especially since you've had it for that many years! Too cool. Suggest to check out the classic and vintage (C&V) forum. Many nice and supportive folks are in the Chicago area. For whatever reasons now and can't get around to servicing yet, set it aside and when the right moment comes, you'll appreciate it all over again.

As for the Schwinn, appears complete. Not sure if you're a DIY or will service it but getting it sorted out, reliable, wheels trued and fitted for comfort would be the first step. Majority of parts can be had for next to no cost. A little trading, swap parts, used bins at a local bike shop or CoOp helps. For new replacements such as brake pads, cables, bar tape, lights, fleabay direct from China can't be beat. The only thing not to skimp on is the saddle. You want to enjoy the ride and not suffer.

Not sure what type of riding you plan but consider the choice of tires. Many low cost alternative (slick / grooved) all-rounder riding 26" are available. Have fun and best of luck on your goal-

Thanks for the encouragement, CA. My Pug and I have been through a lot, even survived a couple of run-ins with cars! My LBS told me that it was basically scrap metal due to some rust but I think the corrosion is only superficial (I'll probably strip her down to see what's what). I was planning on riding more on the bike trails around here more so than road riding to begin with. Once the work begins, I will start a new thread with my progress on each bike.

Speaking of old pugs, I have another one at home. She will be 12 later this month!
