Hello from Winnipeg, Canada

Hello everyone

Been lurking this website for a while but I think it's high time I become a contributing member. I'm from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada where we have mountains of ice and snow over the winter and the temperature reaches -50* C. I plan on winter biking this year after attempting and giving up 2 years ago due to a nasty crash. I have also set the personal goal of cycling the PCH summer of 2015, mostly self supported camping along the way. I look forward to sharing knowledge with everyone here.

Hi Vikingdude,

Welcome to Bike Forum. Having been to Winnipeg I'm impressed you'd consider cycling there during the winter.
With the winters you folks have I can't even contemplate cycling there the next five months.
I bow to your will and iron constitution!!!

Hello from the west coast of Canada during our rainy season. What exactly would you ride during winter in Winnipeg? I'm assuming a mountain or trail bike of some type? I'm also assuming that you'd been cleaning it after every ride due to the salt used there?

Hi and welcome! I grew up a few hours east of you, and I can tell you winter riding is the cat's pyjamas. \

Get some good studded tires (at least on the front) and get out there!

My experience with Winterpeg is that the frigid cold and salty roads result in incredible icy ruts. For most winter city riding, narrower tires are best because they can cut through the 'mashed potatoes' slush and contact the surface underneath. But nice fat (2.2" wide or greater) tires run at pretty low pressure would probably be better in your town.
