I've spent plenty of time on car forums and audio forums. So it seemed logical that I find a bike forum.
My adult riding started after I tried out my room mates 10spd Schwinn. I was amazed how much easier it was to pedal than the old clunkers of my youth.
So in 1974 while living in Milwaukee I went shopping for a bike and picked up a subscription to Bicycling magazine.
27 x 1 1/4 tires. High flange hubs. Center pull brakes. Steel frames but aluminum rims. Probably less than $200
Some time in the late 70's or early 80's I bought a "high-tech" Viscount. Sealed bearings. One of my favorite bikes. Less than $500 I think. I started riding with the Cream City Bike Club in Milwaukee. I loved taking my bike apart to maybe up grade or do maintenance. I found it so much easier than working on cars.
I still had that bike into the late 80's when I moved to Salisbury MD. and got married and adopted a son. Winter of 89 or 90 the bike gets stolen out of our garage. It was getting pretty tired. My home owners insurance was going to pay full price for a replacement. Went to the only bike shop in town in February. They figured $500 would put me onto a comparable bike. But they had no road bikes in stock. They finally found an Aluminum Trek 1000(1989 or 1990) in a warehouse in Chicago. That has been my one and only bike till last month I started watching Craigslist very closely. Now for the first time in my life I have two bikes. I purchased a 2002 Trek 2200 from a tri-athlete. I've got to undo a few things but it looks like it'll be a good bike for me.
I was never a real fast rider and the most miles I've ever done in one day was around 75 but it has always been fun.
