Howdy from Cincinnati
Mark here, 42 - just started riding this year. Decided to start riding to get into better shape. Jogging doesnt do it for me. I asked for a road bike as a gift, and I received a mountain bike. I didn't really know the difference but I still ride it.
A friend of mine who got into biking after he had double lung transplant (he has CF) took me out a few times. After he watched me struggle with distance, he suggested I try his hybrid. Couldnt believe the difference! So I took some longer rides with him. Did a 25, then 35, then 40, then we signed up for a sponsored 65 mile ride.
I enjoyed it but the winds were really strong that day, so many of the folks on the 100 and 65 mile routes slipped onto the 25 mile route. And the hills... they were brutal. Many of the veteran riders called it "challenging". I completed it in just under 8 hours. But I completed it... and I've only been riding since June. So I'm gonna go for the 100 mile route next year.
I am trying to learn all I can and make a sound purchase at tax time for a bike that is better suited for what I like. I still take my mountain bike out on a 18 mile trail that has a couple hills. It gives my legs a good workout. I have found some deals online for some padded butt shorts and a jersey that has pockets in the back... gloves, helmet... I don't have shoes yet. I also bought a seat pad because after about 20 miles it really starts to chaff...
Anyway, that's me. Type 1 diabetic that has had bypass surgery at age 40. Kinda need to be in better shape. I'm not obese, I have a bit of a spare tire, but I can always get better.
