Hello From Texas!

Everyone! I just started riding today! Bought a Hybrid (fitness) bike yesterday to get started to see if I like being on a bike. I picked up riding for the fitness aspect, and I had a rough start today trying to understand gearing when going down a hill and especially going up a hill.

I am glad to be here, everyone I have met during and before buying my bike has been a great resource to me. I'm hoping that being a part of this forum will do the same!

Ronnie

Welcome, Ronnie! Just stay at it and don't get discouraged. You'll be amazed at what you'll pick up along the way. I got my butt dropped big time on my first group ride, when all I had was a hybrid. Yet, I got my first road bike later that year and ended up with more than 1,200 miles. Think of it as a marathon more than a sprint and never forget to have fun!

Uphill: Little Gear up front and big gear in back.

Down hill: Big Gear up front and little gear in back.

Flat ground: Middle Gear up front and middle gear in back. (this assumes your hybrid has 3 gears up front)

Note: up front they are actually called "Chain Rings", not gears.

Bonus Tip: if a pedal pops up, push it back down.

Welcome to cycling and to Bike Forums.
