Hello from Philly area

Hello, everyone.

After living in NYC for almost 20 years, I'm now in the Main Line area outside of Philadelphia in an area that is a combination of really old suburbs and scattered old town centers. I never really felt like I needed a bike in NYC and could rent one if I really needed one, but now I'm in an in-between kind of area that's much denser than post-war suburbia but not nearly as dense as a city. It's dense enough that parking can be a pain in a lot of places but suburban enough that public transportation is really slow and hard to deal with. It's also frequently a very pretty and charming area, with lots of old stone houses and a small-town feel to a lot of places. So I thought a bike would be a really great way to get around my local area, since I really hate driving unless it's like a road trip or something. I imagine most trips will be under 10 miles round trip. I'll probably spend a lot of time in the commuter/city-related sections of the forum.

I haven't really had a bike since I was a kid, so I'll be relying on your experience here to give me some perspective. I'm not familiar with the bike shops around here, and the ones I've seen seem to be focused on kids and mountain bikes, and I've always been really good with my hands and not afraid to venture into DIY and modifications, so I'll probably be asking a lot of advice on that as well. Just lurking for a while has been really educational.
