Sleeping in the cold with a warm quilt is better than any sleeping pill (not that I would know). It puts me into hibernation until the alarm goes off.

Snow on Christmas day! and cold and windy (close to zero Fahrenheit). The Christmas lights sure are purty in the snow!

Boxing Day. Sunny, not much wind, -12C/+10F. Roads covered in snow and ice. No cycling for me today, and probably not when I go to work the following three days.

At long last, we are having proper winter temperatures! It's been a few days since the temperature has gone above 5F/-15C. I actually enjoy the cold spells here because they are generally associated with a high pressure system, which means beautiful, clear, sunny blue skies and crisp starry nights.

Still pretty much no snow, though. It's supposed to warm up (10-15F) tomorrow and snow. Usually I'm a fan, but I have to admit that I've been enjoying the clear, dry streets this year.

The best way to describe local weather conditions and road quality in one phrase would be "Hell With The Fires Out.":)
It rained all summer which is unusual. There were enough pot holes that dodging one ended you up in another.
There are cracks along with the potholes with the rain waehed them out to make it worse.:(

But I rode every day rain or shine for eight months.:)

It's great. Sometimes it's in the 60's in the afternoon. I'm taking out my winter bike and doing some cross.

First snowfall of the winter, so I naturally went for a ride. Wasn't too bad. The the arterial streets were partly clear heading out and wet coming back. As a result "feeder" routes were pretty icy by the time I made my way home and the residential streets were just packed down and ideal to ride on both ways.

The riding gets better and better all the time. Atlanta is a hotbed of bike lanes and off road trails more and more for years and the effect has slowly transformed the city. That's not to say that finding pleasant routes thru the city is a automatic process you just fall into. But 30 years ago it was impossible except for short distances. Now I have a nice network of routes that are highly enjoyable. There's the occasional 500 feet of busy road here and there but 95% good going from one end of the city to the other if you spend the time learning the area. Google maps is great for uncovering new places I might not have bothered to look - but I also know of much better routes than it usually suggests.

We (my region/mid-size city) are gradually getting better; a long way to go, but still ...

Over the past 12-18 months we've managed to create a connector between the north/east and other branches of our river-side MUP, so that now cyclists can reach all three 'points' of the urban area without going on-street. In addition, we've seen the completion of an extension to one branch (of the MUP) that now means that cyclists can extend their rides approx. 10 kms and that kids from the poorer east side of the city can now ride to school(s) off-street.

The net effect: our MUP system now has close to 40 kms distributed among three branches, all river-side, thus allowing 80+ km. rides (three out 'n backs from a central fork where the river branches downtown) without once going on-street for those -- like me -- so inclined.

Not much, and its taken a lot of work lobbying city council and so on, but it's something.

Next project: we are lobbying council to keep the entire system ice/snow clear during winter. Gettin' there, budget constraints permitting.

That said ... I love Atlanta. Been there several times (academic conferences, or on our way through to Fla.) and always enjoyed my time there.

The weather here in Central FL is pretty reasonable--if you don't mind humid summers. We get a little cold weather but nothing a pair of pants and a medium jacket can't fix. Biggest issue is traffic; a lot of our areas weren't built for the urban sprawl that's occurring, so there's just too much little road for the amount of traffic; lots of newbie riders get hit; even as a 30 yr cyclist I've had some close calls. This just isn't a biking town.

I was concerned my Shwalbé marathon plus semi slicks would slip on snow.
As long as there are no hard ruts they are fine. Its milder today. Not windy either.
Every winter ride brings me one day closer to Spring. 😉
