People harbor deep, superficial motives that they cover up with rational reasons. You can basically tell when people are giving reasons that they make up to get respect, which aren't the real reasons. To know this about people, you have to examine your own psyche and reflect on how your mind develops from childhood to maturity (to the extent we've reached maturity). It is brutally honest and self-reflective, but we all have little superficial motives for avoiding rational behavior that we chalk off to bigger-sounding reasons, that are nevertheless not our main concern.

As subforums go, 'LCF' is just 'Commuting' but with attitude.

This "put on some pants" ad wouldn't make sense culturally if people didn't harbor deep superficial motives like the fear of being ridiculed for wearing shorts. You would think people could just ignore social judgement about looking bad wearing shorts, but it is very hard for most people. They would conform to an automotive lifestyle and never even consider going LCF, no matter whether they could do it and it would save them money - just because they want to 'fit in' and not be subtly or blatantly ridiculed for things like wearing shorts or changing clothes before work.

Fascism/authoritarianism is all about driving people and being driven by fear, hatred, ridicule, and the fear thereof; even with little cultural pressures like wearing pants and driving instead of biking/walking/transit.

I never put any socialist motive into not walking around nude. I figured that it was being polite not to spoil their day.

Where are you getting these interpretations from about how other people think or feel ???....There are millions of people all over the world who wear shorts without being ashamed of it and most of them aren't even cyclists. Just average folks wearing shorts because of comfort in hot weather.

I am one such person, but I'm not talking about us. I am talking about the people who this ad is targeting, who would feel motivated to get a car because someone told them to "put on some pants." Some people don't view life as a game of collecting resources by gaining social approval, but many do. For them, the popularity contest didn't end with the high school prom. Instead, it continues, and they expect and accept that they will be privileged according to how well they conform to aesthetic standards of appearance that have nothing to do directly with any job function, except the function of representing the kind of image that the boss wants represented.

Totally relevant comment for the "Commuting" subforum where folks actually commute by riding bikes, which is not a high priority to the LCF movement's fundies... I imagine many of us non-LCF folks oftentimes wear bicycle shorts while driving a car :twitchy:

tandempower's comments are on the mark. Companies use advertising/marketing strategies that work, and that includes mocking and ridiculing or otherwise denigrating people who don't use their product, whether it is deodorant, an online dating service, or car insurance. So this ad is an attempt to ridicule car-free living and portray it as being for losers, because if it catches on, car insurance companies will lose out big time. People have to be pretty naive not to see that.
