I read in the news paper that tomorrow is Car Free Day.
There wasn't much publicity about it, but from what I gathered, it is tied into Earth Day. It's similar to the great american smoke out, Don't Drive for one day. Do any of you think you'll be able to convince somebody you know to ride to work for the first time tomorrow? I asked every body I know, but I guess I'll be by my self again tomorrow.

Hobbit,
The people who came up and sponsor tree hugging day drive car's. They would never go for car free day.

Make every day a car free day. In one year, you can make up for 364 people who didn't participate in the car-free day.

Hey, I think I will go car free tomorrow.

Who's with me?

You guys'd be amazed at how many pounds of polluted chemical soup-mix spews out of just one car's exhaust pipe in one year. I saw an estimate that said that the average Atlantan (34 miles average commute) emits almost
two tons of polluting gasses per year. Almost hard to believe. But if you "unweight" the average, SUV's and
pickup trucks (and old Chevy's) gotta be worse, man. Sometimes I feel like making war on these beasts (until I
look inside and see dainty little fingers on the wheel).

Some of my colleagues were giving me the rasberries about bicycle commuting. They said, "ya, but one person's not going to make that much of a difference by not driving to work every day".

I replied, "imagine if we parked your car right here in the middle of this office and ran it for the amount of time you will drive to and from work today. Even at idle, the exhaust would kill all of us. You contribute that much poison gas to the air every day!"

It proves to be a convincing argument.

I haven't driven except one time since 1982.

I sometimes feel a little guilty when I accept a ride offered by a friend, but at least it's not just one person in the car then.

In the USA being car-free will never catch on till the petroleum supply finally gives out, and I hope that's within my lifetime.

The reason is that cars are inconvenient, but the inconvenience can always be solved by throwing money at it. Bikes are just as inconvenient, but you have to solve the inconvenience by means of ingenuity and work. Guess which route most people will choose.

I've never owned a car. I sometimes accept rides from friends or use public transport, but then, if people used more things other than one person/one car, there wouldn't be as many problems anyway. So there

i'm certainly not car free - although i have tried to minimize my dependence on the dreaded beast.

but, in a blast of irony - now that spring has sprung - i'm finding that my desire to participate in group rides has gotten me back in my car more often!

most days i commute in on one of my bikes. but when i've got an after-work ride planned i have to rack the bike and :insert grumbley sound here: drive in to work. otherwise i wouldn't be able to get myself to the ride start location in time (and fit in a day of work too). the ultimate conflict of bike commuting vs. group rides.

You are still coming out way ahead. Even if you cycle in just once a week, you are doing much more good for the environment than you may suspect. I think the biggest step anyone can take is just finding out it can be done, and doing it regularly.

May 21st is the 8th annual San Diego Regional Bike-to-Work Day. Too bad not all cities sponsor such a day.

Check out https://www.sdcommute.com/bike_to_work.html

Nice site all.

The crisis will hit long before the last drop is pumped. Should be just shortly after decreasing supply and increasing demand start tugging at each other. While I may not live long enough to see the last drop pumped, I'm fairly certain I'll see the other event.

Today was Car Free Day for me too! I love Car Free Day... all of them!
