Forum for Ottawa-Gatineau (Canada) area people

Please forward to anyone local who may be interested...

You are invited to attend the FORUM: "Crude Awakening: Preparing
Ottawa-Gatineau for Peak Oil".

The City of Ottawa's Environmental Advisory Committee and the City of Ottawa
are co-hosting and co-sponsoring this all-day forum on January 28th 2006 at
City Hall. The cost is $20.00.

Other sponsors include: NRCan, Hydro Ottawa, the Cement Association of
Canada, and the Institute for the Environment.

Speakers include: Mayor Chiarelli and Elizabeth May. Mayor Bureau may also
speak if he is available.

You can find the Forum registration form and summary agenda, and background
information on peak oil on our website at:

Included in this background material is a February 2005, 91-page report on
peak oil commissioned by the U.S. Department of Energy. Different scenarios
are presented. The report begins:

"The peaking of world oil production presents the United States and the
world with an unprecedented risk management problem. As peaking is
approached, liquid fuel prices and price volatility will increase
dramatically and, without timely mitigation, the economic, social and
political costs will be unprecedented. Viable mitigation options exist on
both the supply and demand sides, but to have substantial impact they must
be initiated more than a decade in advance of peaking."

Some energy experts' calculations show that the peaking of oil occurred in
2004. Others estimate that it will occur within the next 10 years. This
means we have no time to lose!

Please pass this on to your friends, family, neighbours, colleagues, and
people on your e-mail contacts.

Many thanks,

Ann Coffey
Member of the Peak Oil Forum Planning Committee
