The draft plan also mentioned building bicycle lanes and increasing the number of bicycle parking lots, although some government officials have said that bicycles are not suitable for the traffic in Shenzhen.

You'd think that china would be gung-ho over bicycles, given that they are desperate for every drop of oil they can get. Jeez, why didn't THEY invade iraq? They have tons of coal, and I've heard that they are investing lots of money in gassification plants. Good-bye, polar ice caps.

There's an article randya posted in P&R that states soon the human race will be reduced to one
breeding pair in Antartica. These guys know what they're talking about, trust me.

I just finished reading the book, "The World is Flat' by thomas friedman. In one section, he talks about city in China that was very bike friendly just a couple years ago, but now there are cars everywhere because 'development' has been so infectious.
Unfortunately, autos just seem to be part of what happens to a culture as it develops. Not all cultures, certainly, but unfortuantely for most developers, it's just "the way things are done"

I've been to several cities in China including Shanghai and Fuzhou. The air pollution in Shanghai is the worst I have ever experienced, much worse than New York city. I did not see the type of bicycle culture there as exists in say, Amsterdam. There are far more motor scooters in China and accidents involving these scooters are quite common.

Vietnam is full of mopeds and bicycles and it's great. Cars exist, but for a change they're down the pecking order. The moped is King. I enjoyed it, especially doing three to a moped in Hanoi's rush hour! Twatted my knee on a landcruiser, but didn't break skin...
'nam's full of money, you can see how quickly it's developing, but I can't see the car ever being an aspirational item like it is here, because the moped just makes too much sense.

I have a friend and former co-worker who grew up on a chinese farm and later moved to Xian. Yes, he bicycled in all kinds of weather. He thinks I am crazy to do it voluntarily. He much prefers his Mitsubishi Gran Vitara.
