I Feel So Guilty

Here I am, a proud car-free guy for the better part of five years, I recycle, compost, use solar lighting outside and energy-efficient lighting inside, I actively advocate cycling and condemn irresponsible car use. And I despise young, foolish drivers in their modified little imports who drive like they're in a road rally. So, why do I like the tv show 'Bull Run?' I mean, it goes against everything I stand for. It's a cross-country race consisting of 10 teams driving fast, aggressive cars and taking chances. I shouldn't like it at all, but I do. Of course, if just one of those maniac drivers hits or even endangers a cyclist, they'll have one 'ornery advocate all over 'em. Okay, confession done. I've revealed my dirty little secret.

I really like the movie "Running Scared", but it goes against my beliefs of murder, ****, drugs, child abuse, child molestation, and underwear models becoming acters.
It's just entertainment, no need to beat yourself up about it. But if you do want beaten up, I can arrange something for a price.

Check Fyodor Dostoyevsky in Notes from the Underground.
...Of course boredom may lead you to anything. It is boredom sets one sticking golden pins into people, but all that would not matter. What is bad (this is my comment again) is that I dare say people will be thankful for the gold pins then... I, for instance, would not be in the least surprised if all of a sudden, A PROPOS of nothing, in the midst of general prosperity a gentleman with an ignoble, or rather with a reactionary and ironical, countenance were to arise and, putting his arms akimbo, say to us all: "I say, gentleman, hadn't we better kick over the whole show and scatter rationalism to the winds, simply to send these logarithms to the devil, and to enable us to live once more at our own sweet foolish will!" That again would not matter, but what is annoying is that he would be sure to find followers--such is the nature of man. And all that for the most foolish reason, which, one would think, was hardly worth mentioning: that is, that man everywhere and at all times, whoever he may be, has preferred to act as he chose and not in the least as his reason and advantage dictated. And one may choose what is contrary to one's own interests, and sometimes one POSITIVELY OUGHT (that is my idea). One's own free unfettered choice, one's own caprice, however wild it may be, one's own fancy worked up at times to frenzy--is that very "most advantageous advantage" which we have overlooked, which comes under no classification and against which all systems and theories are continually being shattered to atoms. And how do these wiseacres know that man wants a normal, a virtuous choice? What has made them conceive that man must want a rationally advantageous choice? What man wants is simply INDEPENDENT choice, whatever that independence may cost and wherever it may lead. And choice, of course, the devil only knows what choice.

I think we all of us have a dirty little secret. But I'm not confessing to mine .

Oh, all right. I grow orchids, and not cool growing orchids, either.

Naw, that's just a fluffy tidbit I ran across about 40 years ago. Translated from Dostoyevsky-speak it says, too much rational behavior goes against human nature.

You should be in on some of the late night conversations around my place. I guess we sort of wander off the reservation with no TV to guide us.

Last night I caught Harold and Maude on TCM, and I hadn't seen it in years (long before I retook up cycling), and her crazy driving made me feel the same way... a little guilty for enjoying the story.

I wish I had no TV. I rarely watch it, or, if I do, it makes me fall asleep...
However it is still a distraction and even if no one is watching it, it stays on...

I was just watching the most recent episode and saw something I found astounding. The navigator in one of the cars yelled at a cyclist who was in their lane and the driver, the navigator's friend, turned to him and said 'what the h*** do you think you're doing? Bicycles have the right of way." "I thought they had to be on the sidewalk," the navigator replied. "No. They don't. They're just the same as a car. Now, don't ever yell anything out my window again."

Wow, was I shocked that a young guy knew that much and chastised his friend for harassing the cyclist.

Maybe the producers are throwing the environmentalists a bone?

Or maybe someone in the legal department mentioned something about possible legal liability for inspiring reckless driving around cyclists.

Edit: The more I think about it, the more that makes sense. If the producers of "Bull Run" have a lick of sense, they'll subscribe to a clipping service that alerts them of any mention of their show in forums and blogs. If so, this thread certainly came to their attention.

You could be right. Whether it was throwing cyclists and environmentalists a bone or not, anytime the message gets out there, it educates more motorists who have the mistaken impression we don't 'belong' on the road.

I'm interested. I know it's popular with a lot of people. I just checked it out of the library and watched it. I watched it twice (until a lightning strike knocked out the power) just to make sure of how the end related to earlier portions, but other than that it didn't really grab me. I'm interested to know what I am missing.

Try getting rid of it, you might enjoy "wandering off the reservation" as Platy puts it.

Don't worry about it: my favorite and only video game is Gran Tourismo, I even have the steering wheel, its the only reason I have a TV and PS2. My turbocharged v12 Aston Martin probably gets 3 mpg. Cars as a sport is ok. Cars as means of getting a gallon of milk half a mile from your house is wrong.
