Not going to be driving anytime soon!

Hi Im new to the Bike Forums!

My name is Joshua, and I own a 1974 FreeSpirit lightweight bike by Sears. I have visual problems and a few medical problems that keep me from driving. Luckly, I live in a very small Texas town with alot of bike roads/trails. I am 21 years old and have never had a car, driven a car. ONLY ridden in them. Usually I just ride my bike to wherever I need to go. Wether that be work, library, the park, the grocery store etc. Everything works out great I dont even usually ride the bus, just my bike.

My doctor and parents suggest that I do not drive because of my conditions, however biking is perfect for me because it is slower and for me easier to control.

I'd like to hear from other people who's main transportation is biking!

Joshua H.

Well you'll read a lot from us here. 1974 bike? I'm impressed. Some of us think you aren't missing out on much by not driving. Today I was going to go do some shopping in the suburbs but it was such a nice day
I first thought I'd go check out an old neighborhood where I used to live. Then, I thought I'd go ride out where I used to ride when I lived there. One thing led to another and now I've got my first sunburn and I hope last sunburn of 2007. Gotta put that sunscreen out on the shelf next to the helmet.

Another carfree biker but not by choice. Regardless, it doesn't matter because we are a growing majority as the days of inexpensive motoring are coming to an end. Start saving money and have it taken out of your bank account in the same amount as if you were paying a car loan. By the time you reach 30, you'll be able to buy your first home with a huge down payment.

Hi, Joshua. I'm new to the forums also, but haven't driven a car since 1988. It became all too easy to fall asleep at the wheel, and I figured that I had better stop before I killed somebody. I live in a huge Texas town without a lot of bike roads/trails, and where you live sounds like heaven to me.

I actually choose to be car free. I had the chance to drive as long as I was careful but I choose not to take the risk. I choose to ride my bike because I want to, not because I have to :)
