The dreaded chain snag
What's a good way to keep a bicycle chain from snagging your pant's leg while wearing street clothes?
I've been using little bungie cords, but they dig into your leg in one place while pooching the fabric outwards in an other. Anyone have a better idea? |

Roll up your right pant leg?

Pull your socks up over your pants. Very stylish! I do this a lot in winter when wearing longer wool socks, but haven't won any fashion awards yet.

Chain guard.
I used to have these black metal clips that worked well. |
I used to just live with shredded pant legs. Now I use the velcro strap things. They work, and they're not expensive; I bought mine for US $2.95.

Binder clips! They're good for collecting the loose fabric on the side opposite the chain. And cheap enough to use for mischief. :D

Like my impatient stepson told the group before a ride:
"C'mon! Just cuff 'em up and ride!" |
I went a couple routes to solve the pant leg thing until I came up with the best solution for me.
First, I used shoestrings, and just tied it around the bottom of my leg. It wasn't the quickest method, so I gave that up. Second, I used a large rubber band. This worked well, but looked rather tacky. Finally, I bought a velcro strap from my LBS that works perfect. You could easily make your own, or just pony up the couple of dollars and buy one. It's well worth the investment to me. |
One suggestion, when rolling you pant legs make sure the roll is high enough so it dosen't get snagged in the chainring. I ride fixed part of the time and last week not only did the roll get caught in the chain but it snagged so bad that it pulled tight enough to rip the knee out on my pant leg. The next morning when I went out to ride there was a 3x3 piece of denim stuck to the chainring.

One thing I will never understand -- bikes without chainguards.

Wear shorts. Seriously, in short order it will be far far to hot to bike in anything other than shorts. The other advantage of shorts for me is that I seem to wear through the a$$ of whatever I cycle in. I'd rather replace a cheap pair of shorts once a year than five pairs of dress pants.
In cooler weather wear tights. |
