We have lame Sticky Threads
Actually, they're all good threads, and one is great. But they don't fit the bill as Sticky Threads.
A lot of lurkers and new people read the Sticky Threads first and then decide if they're going to stick with this subforum. I think they're getting a bum steer because our stickies don't give an accurate or favorable impression of what Living Carfree is about. Here are my feelings about the current sticky threads:
>Bike checks is great and should stay. After all porn is what the Internet is all about, especially bike porn.
>The car-free teenager thread is a nice thread but it only appeals to one age group. Why not have a carfree old gomers thread for people like me? Or better yet, make sure sticky threads have broad appeal to carfree people of all ages. Narrower topics are fine, but not so much for sticky status.
>How simply do you live? is a great thread--one of my all-time favs, in fact--but again, it might not be representative and probably doesn't have broad appeal. It should lose its glue and fade away like all great threads.
>New Forum- Living Car Free is outdated and the fascist first post probably turns off a lot of lurkers. My interest is only in making this forum even better than it already is. Especially, I want to see new people continue to come here, like what they see, and decide to stick around for a while.
What do you all think?

My opinions:
Bike checks is okay.
The car-free teenager thread is fresh. (Next year it will be stale, though.) Young people have the best potential of all to remain or become carfree. On that basis it's reasonable to keep it a sticky for now.
How simply do you live? is off topic. It does not represent any kind of LCF consensus viewpoint. There are reasonable people who disagree violently with simple-living philosophy. Even if no other action is taken, this particular thread needs to be un-stickied.
New Forum- Living Car Free is stale.

Bike checks should stay.
The car-free teenager is fine for now.
How simply do you live? would be great if we had a simple living sub-forum under Living Car Free. But it doesn't necessarily belong where it is.
New Forum- Living Car Free is no longer applicable.
A thread of tips and tricks for becoming car free or car light would make a lot of sense as a sticky.

Maybe sticky threads need an expiration date...so they don't get stale
I agree that Bike Checks should stay and the Teenager thread is fine for the time being. Once a thread goes over a couple of pages I am less inclined to read it, unless I have been following it since the very beginning.

The How to get started thread needs glue. The How walkable is your house? thread also might need glue.
Not everyone needs or wants to be car free (after all, someone's got to drive the tractor trailers ). But everyone who comes in here should have an easy time finding ways to avoid using cars. Feet work. Bikes work. Public transit works.

Roody must believe that only a fascist would suggest that this is NOT the forum for discussion about multi-use paths, arguing about your problems with cars, SUV's etc. or to flame people who drive.
Presumably he thinks that lurkers would be turned on by such discussions.

Fascist might be too strong a term. Here's the text of the post:
To me, this post (which is probably one of the first thing new people read on this subforum) threatens heavy-handed moderation, and puts a fear in people that there are some taboo topics, and they could have trouble if they stray from the party line. In fact, Bikeforum mods are pretty laissez-faire and we're given a lot of latitude on this and all the other subforums.

It's the spot for people to discuss getting around without cars, utility trailers, living without the car, etc. Any topics that deviate beyond the spirit of the forum will be moved out into their proper forums.
Enjoy.

It seems to me that MUPs, traffic problems and emotional responses to drivers are all relevant topics to carfree cyclists. I imagine that traffic concerns could even be a deal breaker for somebody thinking about becoming carfree. That makes it a "turn-on" for lurkers in some ways, I guess.

Thanks for the input on my moral character. Now do you have any on-topic thoughts or constructive ideas you want to express?

I suggested a definitions/glossary sticky a while ago. Not to dictate labels, but as a starting point for newbies.

Are you a Fascist because you never tire of trying to control the content of these threads to meet your definition of "constructive" and correct topics, or are you just a big Silly?

I wish the other one would be "How Bikable is your house" if it's going to be a sticky. Also the web site linked there gave some pretty strange results, IIRC.
One sticky I used to like on the Commuting forum was "How was your commute today?" That's been ongoing for several years now. When I participated in that thread it made me aware of interesting things on my daily commute and that was fun. Maybe we should have something like "How was your carfree day?"
An intro thread like the current "My Carfree History" thread might be a good one. Maybe retitle it "My Carfree or Carlight History" so more people would join in.

I guess I'm just a big silly fascist. I'm still waiting to discover if you have any constructive ideas or salient criticisms.

I like the idea of a sticky for 'How was your car-free/car-light day' because it stays fresh as people add to it. A sticky for 'Car-free/car-light History' would be interesting too, as well as again staying fresh as new people add to it. 'How to get started' is an absolute must sticky.
Patc's sticky idea for a glossary/definitions might be nice too.
The current sticky for the 'New car free forum' should be unstuck. This hasn't been a new forum in ages, so why is it still here?
