Car-free deer hunter
 

My co-worker just sent me this under the title "How To Spot A Wisconsin Hunter With A DUI Conviction"

Needless to say I gave her some crap along the lines of "maybe he just likes to ride!!"

In this case, VC stands for Venison Carrier.

as much as I would like to side with you guys on this im still plauged with knowing the type of people that hunt from around where I live. if they are anything simmilar id lean twards the dui. but im from oklahoma and most of the hunters here are complete and utter redneck trash and I should know im related to a lot of them.

I can't speak for Oklahoma. Here in Michigan a lot of people hunt. Some of them are fine citizens. Some can even spell and punctuate.

I know quite a few people who hunt with bikes. In fact they have a serious advantage over the usual four wheelers and pickups. They make vastly less noise and don't give off odors. I talked to the guys at Surly and they've sold Pugsleys to hunters.

As far as the photo, anyone who can actually haul a gutted deer over the shoulder on a bike for miles is nobody I'd want to mess with.

I loved the photo from WI, but my lower back hurts just looking at the guy on the bike hauling venison. Since it appears to be a suburban area with paved streets and cars around, the guy on the bike might not be a hunter. He could be more of a scavenger who saw a deer that had just been run down by a car or pickup, or maybe Mr. Hulk there ran the deer over on his bike! Since there's some snow cover around my guess it that the only good thing about hauling the venison on his back is it might have kept him warm till he made it home.

I have this sneaky suspicion that in a lot of places, the cops would be pulling you over if you started riding your bike while toting a rifle. Note that the guy in the picture doesn't seem to have a rifle with him. Maybe he used something smaller, maybe scavenged as mentioned, maybe he's making his second trip.

I grew up in Wisconsin and every fall for about a week, all the farmers were awol from high school during deer hunting season. I thought it was barbaric, seeing them riding around with deer strapped to the hoods of their cars.

In my old age I realize these are real hunters, who ate what they killed because many had to. Life on a farm is rough in the winter with no money coming in, so a couple of deer in the freezer put food on their tables. And the deer they shot (or bowed) were usually deer that were eating thier corn.

Not at all like paying humters, who are taken to an enclosed field stocked with deer and the deer flushed so they can "hunt" them. Where's the sport in that?

My husband's family exactly. If they did not all get a deer during the season--they did not have meat. They canned and put up a lot of produce from the garden, but the source of protein during the winter was venison.
