I was wrong
Apparently it wasn't changed driving habits but supernatural intervention that brought the price of gas down:
"Mr Twyman is sceptical that market forces might be responsible for the lower prices."

I am guilty of not caring about high gas prices, it gave me excuse to ride. Hard to get that one past all the powers to be for me,,,,,Wife, Boss, etc....
