New Suburban Fad

Last week a man and two boys on ATVs boxed me in while biking out to a friends house. When I passed them on the street the man passed me on the right then pulled in front and signalled one boy to come up on the left. The third boy was behind me. The man kept laughing as he repeatedly slowed down then accelerated. At each acceleration the ATV belched this nasty smoke in my face. I couldn't go left because of the ATV there, I couldn't slow down because of the one behind me and on my right was a ditch. Very obnoxious. The thing is that he's teaching these boys that it is good sport to harass transportational cyclists.

Yesterday, a group of people on ATVs ran us off the bike path. I snapped this photo as they tore off down the intersecting road. It might be the same man that harassed me two days earlier. I guess he thinks he's being a responsible citizen because he put a helmet on two of the four children, he's got one in front of him and the biggest kid has another in front of him. In addition to the poorly designed transportation infrastructure, when you travel to the DC suburbs you have to put up with this kind of behavior from the locals.

1. Call the police, and make it obvious.

2. Take pictures, and make that obvious too.

You'll never see them again if you make these steps clear.

Another idiot passing the wonders of stupidity to the children. Those kids will be behind the wheel of a car
one day, honking and yelling at other cyclists.

If you see them again, call the cops.

Things like this put me one step closer to mounting a video camera to my bike.

Can they even be on the street legally? Here I don't think they can. If there were some way to use that picture against them, since they are probably breaking the law...

Not legal here, and this is serious redneck country. I think daddy could be charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor for pulling that stunt here as well.

if it doesn't have a tag, then it is not street legal.

There are exceptions, but not likely to apply in a residential area.

I'd be taking pictures, video is better, and calling the law every time I saw any ATV in that area after that.

Come to think of it. Not only would I supply the pictures, or/and video, to law enforcement, but also to every news outlet in the area. Let everybody know what a jerk this guy is, and how jerks beget jerks.

Not road legal in NC either. We have had real issues with them trespassing on our property. Fun part is they are coming in over US Government land to ours. A quick call to the local military base usually results in a few MP's coming out, the vehicles being impounded and a hefty fine. The last batch of clowns had a couple of 4x4 trucks, 5 ATV's and their trailer impounded. They are also going to be tagged with destruction of US Gov't property, they cut the cable across the roadway.

Hey gwd...that one kid looks like he is wearing a bike helmet NOT a motorcycle helmet...now if that isn't child endangerment I don't know what is

Imagine what a better example this jerk would have been providing to his kids if they rode bikes together. Instead, he's probably breaking the law by running ATVs on a public road, and he's being dangerous and obnoxious. Shame.

I can't tell from the picture, but is there a Mullett among them? If not, the guy's teaching the kids to be ninja rednecks. Better be careful.

Aaron, look closely there are two kids riding on those without any helmets.

BTW we also have a problem with ATV and motorcycle trespassing. I would love some MP's, count yourself lucky.
We had to install game cameras.

Pepper spray into the one behind you, then you can bail; the U-lock comes next, cuz the mouth-breathers will be coming back around, but since they've already committed aggravated assault, self-defense gives you the right to mortal combat. U-locks are steel, windpipes are cartilage, remember.

And for those of you who want to respond with "sociopath", "excessive violence", "you'll go to jail", let me tell you a couple things:

1.) I'm a vet, thoroughly trained in the combat arts, and I WILL defend myself by any means at my disposal.
2.) Three-on-one? Slam-dunk -- use weapons. Better to be tried by twelve than carried by six.

While I agree that this man is a complete twit, and should have been prevented from breeding at all, let alone from actually raising children, I do not agree that violence would be appropriate in this instance. This guy is harassing bicyclists, not assaulting them. A better response would be to simply slam on the brakes, confront the inbred morons verbally if they stick around, and then resort to the u-lock if things get ugly, and at least then the playing field would be more equal because the ATVs aren't moving. My guess is that if you stopped and asked the man wtf he was thinking, he would simply go away. BTW, I'm not a pacifist by any means; in fact, I'm an ex-Army Ranger. I just don't believe it's very intelligent to assault people just because they're a**holes.

Allen,
I have used a laser, 2 million candlepower spot lights and the occasional shot from a rifle to get the attention of the errant ATV users. With limited results...we apparently have a large pool of ignorant riders in our area. You would think that word would get around that A) Trespassing on Government land is illegal, and B) some crazy summ***** lives in the tan house on the hill

That's funny that it's in my own backyard... well, practically. I live on the virginia side of DC in a suburb... about 10 minutes out; tysons corner area where your standard SUV is a porsche and everyone else is in BMWs.
I think I am going to carry a camera with me from now on to document this kind of stuff. I get stuff thrown at me every once and a while from idiotic kids; but thats about it. I don't see a bike friendly Tysons anytime in my future.

I have use the green spotting laser (whose beam can be seen from the side) off of my telescope and blasted away with a .22 occasionally.

Sadly, I've come to the conclusion that crazy summ***** tactics are useless vs. crazy summ*****es.
Like a snake being immune to its own venom.

What has worked is anyone who wears a badge is more than welcome to fish in our pond and bow hunt in our woods. Since then the sheriffs have been quite a bit more protective of our land (their fishing hole).

I thought of this kind of thing, too. But I really think it will hurt "daddy" much worse, and the lesson to the kids will carry more weight, to hit him with the legal system. He only thought he had a right to privacy, but not when it comes to dealing with these folks.

Children illegally riding ATVs without proper safety gear? HRS just loooves child endangerment cases. They'll make his life miiiserable when they start crawling up his arse with a microscope.

So, gwd, when you submit the evidence to your local law enforcement authority, make sure, either they, or you, get HRS involved.

If they do decide to treat this as child endangerment, he will rue the day he ever saw an ATV.

I forgot to point out that the neighborhood is one of those without sidewalks, the bike path is probably an affront to their sense of self. The bike path got installed as part of a VDOT megaproject. I think there was some federal money so a requirement for a percentage for bike/ped stuff. You can tell from the photo that the people who built the neighborhood didn't care to walk. The people who use the bike path seem to be immigrants from the next neighborhood over judging by their clothes and the metal in their dental work that flashes when they smile and wave. Well actually, in that part of the county, the smiling and waving at transportational cyclists marks them as alien. As you say the native born tend to behave rudely to people on bikes.

Call the Fuzz. It's illegal to ride ATVs on the public roads and highways in most states in the first place. Then you can add in the harassment/reckless driving info...

I hate ATVs. I've yet to see any non-*******ish behaviour associated with them. They're noisy, dangerous, and don't belong on OR off roads (yes, I have a problem with recreational landscape destruction).

There's a nest of them down the street from me but as yet they seem to be behaving themselves at home. In the OP's scenario - yes, I'd be calling the police, Child Services, the highway department, and whoever else I could think of.

They have their place, we use a couple on our 40 acre farm in lieu of a full sized 4x4 truck. But they are a tool and used as such. I feel the same way about cars for the most part. Under 2 miles to the grocery store, using the car is like driving screws with a hammer, uncalled for and unnecessary.
