Improvement

The city just removed a section of hot right car lane and made it a part of the adjacent pedestrian area with a neighborhood bulletin board kiosk. It makes the corner much more pedestrian friendly. Its a tiny retreat of car culture in my neighborhood.

I'm just curious about how this came to be. Is there someone on the town council who rallied for this cause... or was there some other event behind it? Is there a strong cycling or transportation advocacy group that played a part in it?

I'm not sure. If I go by with my camera I'll take an "after" photo, I have a "before" photo. You can tell by my other threads that DC has been making ped/bike improvements year by year since about the late 1990s. The bike share, the bike/bus lane, "Stop for Peds" signs, ADA ramps, bike rack program, bikes on buses.

This place had a public Kiosk that some newcomers to the neighborhood thought was an eyesore. I like the idea of having a space where anyone can post anything so I got involved in preserving it. Nothing fancy- speaking up for the kiosk at meetings and that sort of thing. I found out that the arts comission got some money and they wanted to do an arts project there. Next thing I knew there were dedicated car-sharing parking spots there then they took out the road and made the ped space contiguous with the sidewalk. Plenty of room for an artsy sculpture and public kiosk. I wouldn't think the cyclists were for removing the road because it was a fun downhill turn, now we have to ride around the kiosk. It is safer for peds. It makes the corner a little nicer to walk through - one less exposure to speeding cars. It is on my way to the Saturday farmer's market.
