"Straddle Bus" to help China's terrible traffic?
https://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?...mg;eveningnews
This just seems like a terrible idea. So the advantage is that it does not take up road space but is that not what a subway or commuter train does? How about elevated rail? The traffic below the bus would be moving at a much slower, stop and go, pace than this bus. That doesn't seem dangerous to anyone else but me?
I would hate to be splitting lanes on my bike when one of these things came through!
Does anyone have any idea how this would work? Special traffic laws?

Bet the air quality in those buses would be wicked... after passing over hundred of idling cars.

I laughed when first seeing the article days ago. It's a pipe dream because the cars below would not be able to change lanes and accidents below are bound to happen as this bus creeps overhead. What if someone does not want the bus to pass them and decides to keep the car on the "Track" so it does not pass? What speed will the driver of this new bus be allowed to travel as he passes all those cars? Quite dangerous if you ask me if a car decides at the last minute to change lanes and get crushed by the bus as it's making a pass.
It's several million for the bus but you would also need to elevated bus stops and elevators because those boading the bus will have to do so 25 feet above the ground. This will get very costly fast. In fact, I suspect the price will come very close to what one would pay for a monorail which in my opinion would be safer.
However, they really need to invest in subways and commuter railroads. Forget making surfact transport efficient. That was lost when they decided to create this motorized dream for every man an woman.

I agree, it seems like this design would cause an incredible number of accidents, which would cause even more traffic congestion. Someone didn't think this through very well.

Yeah, it seems cool from a design point, but it's a pretty silly and dangerous solution considering what other posters have already said above.

I would think of it more as a moving tunnel rather than a vehicle. It holds 1400 passengers, so the potential is there for reducing auto use directly.
This is a concept, like the concept cars at auto shows that rarely end up on the market. It shows how desperate the Chinese are to find a solution to their traffic congestion problem. Of course the simplest solution--fewer cars--is out of the question in this whole car-crazy world.

The design also shows the Chinese have their thinking caps on. It is a pretty way to solve a problem given the crowded circumstances.
Sometimes we tend to discount the Chinese... big mistake.

A moving tunnel with people on top of it still just sounds like a train except that this one can cause accidents...
