"Cycling in the Netherlands in the 1950s"-With Flowers In Their Hair Too!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HgLqts3qJs&NR=1

Gathered from the Youtube Webpage-How people of The Netherlands really think about their bikes past & present:

"....i wonder how many kids wer killed by cracking their skulls after falling off their parents bicycle durrin this time

101andrewj 4 months ago
@101andrewj no more than today. Every Dutch kid is still on their parents bicycle and we still don't wear useless plastic hats in this country.

markenlei 3 months ago

I am proud to cycle everyday and am happy not to have a helmet on. Most of the time you fall on your side or back, almost never on your head. Only if you ride a mountain bike, but you alsmost can't call that a bike.

It's interesting to think that millions of Dutch families emigrated to other English speaking countries in hope for a better life around the filming of this movie clip.......People like myself. The grass seems always greener on the other side of the big pond. Now I look back and admire life back then the way it was.

@markenlei Glad to learn that helmets are useless, guess all the people I know who avoided traumatic brain injuries thanks to wearing helmets would have been fine without them as well. I'll be sure to tell them, along with all professional cyclists.

@markenlei Thank you so much...plastic hat is useless.. In America, folks think they are "safe" because they wear them. It's monkey business :-0

I always love watching this when it pops up now and again on BF. Even though its from the '50s, it never gets old to me.

Except for the clothing styles and auto models, it doesn't look much different than my last trip to the North Sea/Haarlem area in 2002. I plan to be back there for a week or so this April and enjoy the Bicycle riding on the cycle paths through the tulip growing areas once more.

Attached is a picture from a slide taken about 20 years ago with my daughter taking a break from a bike ride in NL to play in the tulip petals left over after a bulb harvest.

You are right, it is like heaven for a person who likes bikes, bike culture; and flowers too!

:envy: I had a big Dutch bike tour planned a couple of years ago. But never made it. This video really has the itch going again.

It's hard to believe that these people were just recovering from World War II with mass starvation, deliberate flooding of large regions, and bloodthirsty German occupation. I wonder if being able to take a peaceful bike ride in the sunshine helped them to get over the horrors they had just experienced?

We are planning a tour in the Netherlands, hopefully later this year or perhaps next. We are going do a spoke and hub style tour and do out and backs for a week, then spend a week in Amsterdam staying on a canal boat.

Your pretty daughter seems like she is in heaven surrounded by those wonderfully bright colored tulips.

I am glad you included the other part of your family's photo album. It really completes the picture-perfect day with your whole family, including the floating tulip petals.
