I saw this online the other day. All nice cities to live in but it caught my eye that Hamburg was mentioned. We discussed that city a couple of months ago. Even though it wasn't a bicycle friendly city with almost no infrastructure, it was still a great looking European town.

Funny how they didn't mention the Netherlands.

And just a few weeks ago as well.

According to Google's street view from when? ... 5-ish years ago?

Not saying it's not a great-looking European town. IMO most have a certain appeal to them.

Why would they? The Netherlands isn't car-free.

The photo of Milan really got my attention. I know Italians are very visual and love paintings, but... Good thing there are no cars... it would really be dangerous.

I said it before, there were almost no bike lanes. I searched for a bike map and couldn't find any. The sidewalks were broad which is perfect for walking leaving the side streets narrow with parking on both sides. We've all cycled on sidestreets like this and you have to take the lane because there's no room for the motorist to lane split past. I prefer a side street that that's one and half car lengths wide because you're less likely to get honked by a motorist when they can lane split past.

Hamburg did have broad boulevards but they were not the kind I would enjoy riding.

While searching for a bike map, I came across this comment.

>>>We rented a bike that was pretty good and not expensive at all. However, for a dutch person it was quiet hard to cycle in Hamburg because there are hardly any bike lanes or paths. Most Germans seem to cycle on the sidewalk instead. That was scary! <<<

The Netherlands isn't car free but we do have a couple of car-free city centres in cities like Delft and Zwolle.
