2007 Goals

I am going to use this post to edit my choices for 2007 rides...

2/10 Tour de Palm Springs - 100 miles, ~2500 feet of gain
4/14 Mulholland Double - 202 miles, 16,500 feet of gain
4/21 BP MS150 in Texas - 180 miles in 2 days
5/05 Breathless Agony - 114 miles, 12,000 feet of gain
5/26 Heartbreak Double - 202 miles, 15,500 feet of gain (King of the Mountains award earned, also my 10th double)

time to rest...

9/15 HooDoo 500 (2 person team) - 512 miles, ~30,000 feet of gain
9/22 Everest Challenge - 208 miles, 29,035 feet of gain
9/29 Moonlight Magic - 100 miles during the full moon, 2850 feet of gain (possibly removed due to time constraints)
10/5 Furnace Creek 508 (4 people on the team) - 508 miles (duh!), ~35,000 feet of gain
10/11 Great American Beer Festival - Denver, CO, 5280 feet of gain
10/13 MS150 Bay to Bay - 150 miles, ~4500 feet of gain

I also need to complete a third double century to hit the California Triple Crown again this year, I'll figure that out more on the fly since the rest of the SoCal forum is deciding on the 1st Double BF ride.

Anyone else thinking of their goals for the new year? Anyone need to start planning for their PBP invitation but completing other long distance events? I see that other people using the edit function on their posts, let's keep this thread smaller... also, you people gotta follow suit and create links to these events; I am in awe over some of these and I will probably continue to increase my distances and need to find new events to travel to!!!

heh ... I love how pain is used as a marketing term in rides. It's something to throw in the face of folks who deride cycling as the new golf. good luck w/ the Furnace 508 and all of the breathless, heartbreak hoodoo.

PBP is definitely in my plans, but I'm still unsettled about which brevets I'm going to ride to qualify, but a general glance at the schedule seems to be:

4/7 Boston Brevet Series 200K - 120 miles, ~6000 ft.
4/28 Boston Brevet Series 300K - 180 miles, ~9000 ft.
5/12 Boston Brevet Series 400K - 240 miles, ~12000 ft.
6/9 Boston Brevet Series 600K - 360 miles, ~18000 ft.

(btw, any Northeast riders who are interested in an overall schedule of regional brevets, ought to check out bmike's Google schedule. useful tool, that.

I will probably mix up my schedule with rides in the Saratoga Springs series or Berkshire series. The Berkshire brevets have been generally gorgeous and fun, but they run later than Boston, and I'll be eager to get my qualifiers done. Work might also conflict with some of those dates, but I won't know until later in February.

Then, after the 600k is done, I'm kind of at loose ends for rides in July. Maybe do the Saratoga 24-hour ... but if others have suggestions, I'm all ears.

Other rides I am planning on doing besides a brevet series and PBP ...

6/23 MS 150 Great Mass Getaway
8 or 9/??? Deerfield Dirt Road Randonee - 107 miles, 11000 ft. gain, 70 miles on doubletrack and fire roads (assuming that this is held again, last year kicked my ass and I want a re-match)

Stagecoach? I'm giving him grief for not doing the Butterfield Double like he said he would. But I might forgive him, if he'd reconsider Stagecoach. I know a place he can sleep for the night.

Hi

I havent planned specific events but......

This year will get 4500 kms but was only serious for about the second half of the year with the every day commute.

I had planned on 6000 kms for 2007 (I already commute daily to work and have averaged 500kms per month for the last half of the year.... just under 20kms on the normal route) but...

I have now joined Audax Australia and have ridden one brevet so upgraded my goal to 12000 kms and want to get a Noveau Radonneur Award (50, 100 and 150 and have already done the 150) and a Super Series (1 of each 200, 300, 400 and 600 km brevets).

I want at least one century per month on top of any brevets since due to work rosters I wont be able to ride all the weekends Audax has planned rides

Wish me luck

I don’t think I’m going to be as ambitious as I was last year, but it is still a pretty busy schedule.

3/3 Blossom Ride, 62 miles, 2,500’
3/31 Solvang Spring Double, 200 miles, 9,000’
4/14 Alta Sierra Challenge, 100 miles, 10,000’
4/28 Wildflower, 100, 6,000’
5/12 Central Coast Double, 200 miles, 13,200’
5/18-20 The Lung Ride, 3 day tour, 180 miles, 10,000’
5/26 Work Heartbreak
6/23 Grand Tour Highland Triple, 300 miles, 12,000’
10/13 Bass Lake Powerhouse, 200 miles, 14,000’
10/20 Solvang Fall Double, 200 miles, 10,100’

For 2007 my goal is to do a complete brevet series, attend and complete PBP. From San Diego I am within reach of four brevet series; San Diego, Arizona (out of Casagrande), San Lois Obispo and Davis. I'll also be doing a few double centuries along the way. Counting them up, maybe 7 or 8 for the year. Then there is also the 508, where I want to do a two person recumbent team. Of course, there will also be a few centuries here and there.

The year is almost done and yet I still have a century (Planet Ultra's Xmas Ride) and a 200k (circumnavigating the Salton Sea with the San Diego Century Riders) yet to go. Good thing the 2007 season doesn't start until January 15th (Stagecoach Century). That will give me a few weeks to rest. Then again, the Arizona 200k brevet is January 6th......

I'm hoping to do a century a month. I know I can do it physically, but I don't know if I have the discipline to get it done. We'll see.

And maybe, just maybe, I'll do the Grand Tour Lowland Double. We'll see.

The Arizona Spring Brevet series and then since I can't afford PBP I am going to ride the 1200k permanent that runs through the forested areas of Arizona to the Grand Canyon and then back to Springerville. Should be interesting.

I am doing the KOM centuries this year as well, although I am not doubling them up like Extort.

Other centuries I will likely do:
- Stagecoach
- Palm Springs
- Coolbreeze
- and maybe Poway

I also try and climb a few passes in the Sierras each summer. Nothing definite yet, but I plan to be up near Yosemite this year.

I also plan on doing a double later in the year (maybe the LA Grand Tour), depends how much business travel I have to do after the KOMs.

Well, if all goes well, my plans are:

Jan: Stagecoach century
Feb: Butterfield double
Mar: Tour of the Borrego century or Solvang Double
Apr: Sea Otter OR Wildflowers
May: Cruisin' the Canejo OR Sea to Summit
June: Eastern Sierra double OR Lake Tahoe Century and/or Grand Tour double (if I don't do ES for sure)
July: Windmill Century
Aug: Cool Breeze double metric
Sep: Grand Tour Lite double metric and Lighthouse century
Oct: 5 counties century and Spooktacular OR Solvang fall double
Nov: Solvang's finest century
Dec: Tour de Francis century (he's doing a series, so something above will have to go to accommodate)

This is a wish list not a "put in stone" kind of thing. I've left no room for rest and suspect overtraining will settle in around the end of June (which is what happened last year, and my schedule this year is 5 times more challenging). This means in July, I'll be sitting on my ass getting fat and happy - just in time to hit Cool Breeze with an extra 5 pounds hanging out over my saddle.

Well, since I moved back to Paris last year I guess I have to do PBP...
Actually I'm really looking forward to it. I've been thinking about it for a couple of years and sometimes I wish it would start tomorrow!!!

There's two ways that I look at my goals. First, in terms of rides, here's what's currently holding space on my calendar:

Sebring 24-hour, Sebring, FL, Feb
I might be able to get out to S. Cal. for one of the early season doubles. That'd be great.
Calvin's Challenege (12-Hour), Springfield, OH, May
National 24-Hour Challenge, Barry County, Michigan, June
Metamora 200, Metamora, IL, August
PBP, France, August 20-24 (and the required brevet series beforehand)
UMCA 24-hour championship, Iowa/Illinois, September
Tejas 500, Cleburne, TX, October
Assorted other local and personal centuries and long, fun rides like TOSRV, RAIN, etc.

Second, things I want to achieve with my riding and experiences I want to have with cycling this year:
(1) Have fun and be safe!

Everything else after that is totally negotiable, but here's the current list:
(2) Complete qualification for the UMCA's Ultracyclist of Distinction (requires 3 years of meeting certain milestones.
(3) Talk some more folks into getting into LD riding. So much fun to corrupt others!
(4) Volunteer for some local rides (and brevets, if I can work out preriding them the weekend before)
(5) Finish and get approved those permanent routes in SE Ohio that I started planning but keep putting aside because I'm lazy.
(6) Commute more.
(7) Win the UMCA's 24-hour division. Ballsy.
(8) Win the JMC competition outright. Presumptuous? Insane? Sure, but you have to be both to shoot at a target like that. And posting the goal for the world to see on the internet will keep me focused on it and committed to it. It'll also fire up the competition, which will make for some great LD racing this year!

Update: I definitely want to do a century each month. And I'm probably pushing my double century attempt to February, with an intention of doing at least two more doubles if all goes well in February.

OK, I've finally decided on some goals ...

1) Super Randonneur series (200K, 300K, 400K, and 600K)
2) This year, I need to design local 400K and 600K routes to add to the Alberta Randonneur calendar. That should be interesting. There are some very specific rules to follow for route designing, and then there are many things which appear on most randonneurs' wish lists.
3) Paris-Brest-Paris ... https://www.audax-club-parisien.com/
4) 10,000 kms or more
5) Centuries ... this one I'm still debating about. I may decide to do a third year of centuries each month, or I may decide to aim for a certain number of centuries for the year, or both. I'm also tempted by the idea of doing a non-stop century or perhaps a trainer century.
6) Touring ... I'd like to do a bit more touring in 2007 than I did in 2006. There's a local 3 day tour in the mountains in May which is one possibility. And if possible it would be great to do some touring in France and maybe other parts of Europe.
7) More roads ... I've covered most, but not quite all, of the paved roads within about a 50 mile radius of where I live. I'd like to ride the rest of them, and then perhaps start exploring futher out.
8) 24-hour race ... I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to afford the time and expense of getting to a 24-hour race this year, but I'd like to try. I wish there was a local one!!
9) Something different ... the UMCA has all sorts of challenges, one of which is a cross state or province challenge: https://www.ultracycling.com/ , then the Perimeter organization has around-the-state/city/island/whatever challenges https://www.pbaa.com/Home.html
10) And if I'm not working when they hold their rides this coming summer, I may try to do some riding with the local club ... I need motivation to add intensity to my rides.

Looks like we may run into each other a bit this year!

Well, having finally started riding again after a back injury flare-up (almost 0 miles from 9/1 to 12/1) I am hoping to have a good year. The back is stronger than it has been in a long time, so it was worth the rest I think.

Goal 1- break 360 miles in 24 hrs.
Goal 2- 12,000 miles for the year

Race schedule:
Sebring 24hr in Florida in Feb.
Calvins Challenge 12hr, Ohio in May
National 24 hr. Challenge, Michigan in June
Saratoga 24 North American 24 hr Championship, NY in July (Note that this replaces Iowa)
Ultra Midwest Sunup to Sundown 12hr, Iowa in Sep. (near my sons birthday so this is optional and not as likely)
Texas Time Trials Texas in Oct. (Note that this is not listed this year on UMCA schedule?!?!)

Other goal- get back below 165 lbs (30 pounds) I put almost 15 on not riding this fall.

Great goals here!
Good luck everyone.

Here's what I've blocked out so far:

Easy to track: (not so easy to attain)
Get to my typical end of summer riding weight by March 1
5,000 miles in the UMCA Year Rounder Competition
SR Series
Century a month (in addition to my brevet schedule) - beginning March 1
Establish 3-4 RUSA permanent routes in Vermont / Champlain Valley Region
1000k or 1200k (PBP looks like it is out of the budget for this year)
Ride the Highlander in W. NY as a pacer for some friends - and have fun!
Ride the Mad River Valley Century ride as a pacer for a friend - and have fun!
Run a half marathon (still looking at the calendar to see how it fits / conflicts with the SR series)
2 bike camping trips (weekenders) summer / fall.

I was also looking at the RUSA R-12 award, but that may be difficult as I think I'm a geographically challenged randonneur - I'd have to travel a ways to get some of the rides in during the "off season" here in VT and New England.

Not so easy to track:
Increase intensity so I can start to hang with the semi-fast boys and girls. (I think the fastest boys and girls will be out of my reach for some time!) This is an ongoing process!
Have more "fun".
Keep a pleasant attitude on the bike - I'm slower than most and faster than some - so just enjoy the ride!
Keep the mystery anemia I suffered with all last season in check as my miles increase (my blood levels are just now above the low normal range)
Ride lots, going car lite when work doesn't demand the travel.
