Whats in your bag?

Hi all,

As a relative newby to Audax rides what would be considered as a bare essential amount of ESSENTIALS (not counting food supplies) that one should take on ride 200 km and over?

Cheers Scotty

my pack list for last year's brevet series is here. Not including food and water, the gear that I pack in my rack trunk is (I'll put a * on the items considered essential)

* ziploc bag (spare cue sheets and brevet card)
* reflective vest for night riding
reflective ankle and wrist straps
* two spare tubes
* patch kit
* multitool
* 2 tire levers
* spare bike chain link
* 1 Fiber-Fix kevlar spoke replacement
ziploc bag (Digital Camera, PDA)
Showers Pass rain jacket
Pearl Izumi AmFib Leg warmers
Two bungee cords
Small roll of duct tape
One handipack of tissues
4 zip cords

and (of course) * keys, * phone, * wallet

multitool should have a chain breaker, hex wrenches, spoke wrench and knife.

In addition to the stuff spokenword lists, I bring a lightweight first aid kit. I also bring a patch kit, tire boot, and spare tire. In colder weather I bring an emergency space blanket and sometimes chemical toe warmers.

Give or take an item or two.

Actually that is my list for a 1200K with a cycling tour before or after it. But I basically divide what I take on brevets into most of those same categories:
1. Bicycle - including the bicycle, of course, plus waterbottles, bags, computer, lights, etc.
2. Tools - including tire changing equipment, multitool, zip ties, etc.
3. Medical - including painkillers, ozonol, sunscreen, etc.
4. Clothing - cycling gear, rain gear, cool weather gear, reflective gear, etc.
5. Nutrition - sports drink, energy bars, etc.
6. Personal - ID, money, camera, brevet card, etc.
