Ragbrai 2008

OK, so I'm in a team, and good to go for RAGBRAI 2008. The longest organized ride I've done prior to this was the Seattle to Portland (STP) in 2006. I think I have the training thing down for this endurance ride, and I'm well on my way (at least in my own mind) to being ready physically. What I was hoping somebody could share, is all the other gems of advice for everything else...ie comfort items, special equipment that might make the week more enjoyable, etc, etc. I heard that camp showers are banned for environmental reasons, so is there an alternative to personal hygene? What about special camping equipment?

Thanks for sharing.

I assume that personally-owned showers are prohibited. Surely the organizers are providing shower facilities for the riders.

I hope you're both kidding about this...

Just in case you're not, I'll elaborate. The biggest training you need to do for Ragbrai is being able to consume large amounts of food, alcohol, and still be able to ride your bike. As far as showering goes, all the overnight towns will offer some type of showering facilities for you to use, but plan on them being busy. Most of the teams that are using some type of RV or bus for their personal gear conveyance set up their own portable shower setup varying from the water bag camp showers to more elaborate setups using pressurized water, water heater, and a self built shower stall.

I've read the articles. I assume that some sort of conditioning would be prudent.

As for my team, no RV or bus. But, we do have a couple vehicles and drivers to get our stuff from camp to camp. I personally do not know many of the riders. I "rode" into this deal on my brother's coat tails, and in fact, I don't think he knows more than one other guy. I think a number of them are return riders. Bottom line, is that I really don't know what to bring outside of the basic stuff. I guess I was looking for was the ol' "I wish I'd have had a...." or "I sure am glad I brought a...."
