Has anyone...

ever wanted to just say "**** it," pack some supplies, get on the bike and just ride... for months and months. Leaving everything behind? I'm at a point in life where I think I'm capable of that. I'm not married, have no kids, or anything tying me down. I had two jobs up until recently, I've been down on my luck for quite some time, and I'm tempted to do this. It's kind of like that movie "Into the Wild" about Chris McCandless and how he just wandered the country. I guess it would be more of a soul searching trip.

i think most people (even non-cyclists) feel the need to break out every once in a while. it will pass.

however, you have nothing tying you down, so why not do it?

First of all, you might want to post this in the Touring forum instead of the Long Distance forum. It's more of a touring thing.

Secondly, been there, done that. As a part of a life transition, I quit my job, gave up my apartment, sold/tossed/stored my stuff, and toured Australia for 3 months in 2004.

I highly recommend not letting it pass, but rather going for it.

If you've got no engagements go for it! Pick a place to go; out of country or not. And of course when you get back tell us all about it.

I say do it!!! If you are really down on your luck you really don't have anything to lose and might just end up in a better position.

I have always admired those who have the courage to just fly with the wind for a while. I had a friend who moved to Hawaii with no job prospects and nothing but a plane ticket and a duffle bag. He completely enjoyed himself. I have 4 little kids (the oldest of whom is 5!!) so it is no longer a remote option for me. But I can still dream of it.

I have another friend who was an accomplished professional in a great career. She and her husband quit their jobs, sold everything they owned, bought a 50 foot boat and sailed the carribean for 2 YEARS!!! Their blog is here. https://www.rodandlisawolfe.com/

I love this quote from her blog and intend to live up to it some day. "We are professional, working class people that have faith in our employability and are willing to take a chance at leaving our careers to breathe deep, live life, and grow from our experiences outside an office."

When they returned, they both found high paying jobs again with no problem. Some folks have all the fun but only those who can leave the ties behind

It's my fantasy. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) it'll probably always remain unrequited. Do if you want to and life's circumstances allow it.

Did it after college. Had a lot of fun. Still haven't got a permanent job. But if you do it for more than 2 years you are officially a hobo, not that there is anything wrong with that..
