GPS and UK cycle paths

I have used magellan and garmin for sailing also, tomtom and navman for car and motorcycle journeys.

now into walking and cycling (mainly cycling) I wanted a unit that i could use where there are only cylce paths and public footpaths.

i bought a garmin etrex H which i thought would be ideal, but it seems it is only good at finding position and tracking route, but difficult to input data to goto.

eg: the best way i casn find to input a waypoint is to measure course and distance on a map from a previous waypoint (maybe the starting point) then create a waypoint in the unit using this information.
I am correct or am i missing something.

another alternative would be to use the tomtom which would (i think) be relatively easy to find a (nearby) location to travel to, and at least offroad would give some indication to navigate to. ( i have a extra battery pack for this)

or is there a better unit i should consider?

also are there maps specific to cycleways and public rights of way?
