First double century at night
I'm going to be attempting my first double century in two weeks. I plan to start at 6:00 in the evening. This will be the first part of a 330 mile ride that I will complete in 48 hours. I'm doing it at night to avoid the heat, wind, and traffic... plus it'll be really cool to see the sun set and rise again. I will be alone and unsupported. Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.

there isn't much to say other than make sure your lights will work for many hours. Backups are good. Wear a reflective vest and ankle straps

Figure on being a little slower between midnight and dawn. Carry enough food and water plus all the usual advice.

Can I go along? I promise to help make the ride a more memorable experience.
I have considerable night-riding experience - in fact I just did one of my infamous "all nigh moonlight" rides -just this last Thursday. I started from an urban area at 3pm and finished at 5:20am the next day. In theory, many miles could have been ridden without lights - but I just about positive I would have hit a raccoon if I had tried that. |
