Rear Wheel Suggestions?

My Mavic Aksium rear wheel went kuputz today while I was doing a century ride. I'm looking for suggestions for a new one. For this wheel, I will put a high emphasis on durability. I'm 210-215 lbs and I tend to sit in a more upright posture, putting extra weight on the rear wheel. Any thoughts?

This is a good place to start a search. I needed a wheel for my hybrid and at 260 lbs it seems to be ok Rear 700c Deore XT M770 Mavic A719, Black, 36h (WE 7099)

or what came on my touring bike Vuelta XRP touring wheel https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-700C-XRP...-/380201143758

The home spun page lets you look at a lot of price ranges and applications

The Deore hub requires 135mm drop-out spacing. This is not a match for the 130mm spacing of the Mavic wheel.

This is a very solid long distance wheel for a heavier rider: https://www.bikeman.com/WE7289.html?u...ign=GoogleBase

While this wheel is not an esthetic match to the failed Mavic, a 36 spoke wheel on Shimano road hubs using Velocity rims will be very strong. I'm 210 lbs and use this wheel with 32 spokes with great results.

I'm 220-240lb and have run 32spoke wheels on my "brevet" bike for over 15 years. They work great. Really, the important thing is not wheel itself as much as how the wheel is built. You can get the best components in the world on a 42 spoke wheel and if the guy who builds it doesn't know what he's doing it will fail.

Thanks for the advice. Figuring out a place to start in the big world of wheels is the most difficult thing.

While this wheel is not an esthetic match to the failed Mavic, a 36 spoke wheel on Shimano road hubs using Velocity rims will be very strong. I'm 210 lbs and use this wheel with 32 spokes with great results.

Aesthetics are not a serious concern for me. I don't want things to look grossly mismatched, but function must come before looks. I wasn't able to finish my century ride yesterday because of the rear wheel. I would have ridden with a bright pink tire combined with a lime green wheel if it meant I could have finished.

You might consider replacing both front & rear as a set. My 32 spoke Shimano/Velocity set, F&R, was less than $300.

If you need it fast, check what the bike shop has in stock, and that narrows it down tremendously. If you trust the wheelbuilder in the first place, then he's also a good source for recommendations on what to use.
