2012 -- Century Challenge

This is the thread for those who will not be able to complete the 2011 Century-A-Month challenge.

The Century-A-Month challenge requires that a cyclist ride at least one century (100 miles) in each month of the year. But sometimes because of weather, accidents, or other commitments riding a century in each month of the year becomes impossible. And sometimes people get into cycling long distances partway through the year, but would like to join a challenge for motivation.

Even if we can't participate in the CAM challenge, it's nice to have a place to log our centuries (100-mile rides) throughout the year ... so here it is!

The challenge: Let's see how many centuries (100-mile rides) we can ride this year ... in any month of the year!!

Get ready ... get set ............... GO!!

In case my 2012 CAM participation fails for some reason....

#1 Jan 4 - 160km/100mile RUSA populaire
#2 Jan 7 - 200km/125 mile RUSA brevet (of note, involved in accident, rode last ~25 miles (incl bonus miles) in small front chainring (of a triple) after big front chainring was bent beyond using either it or the middle front chainring)
#3 Feb 8 - 100 miles same route as #1, originally planned as a "official" populaire, rescheduled, canx'd, then family events changed & the time became available again so I left late, took unusual (for me) stops at unusual times/places (even logged onto the Net during the ride at a couple stops) and finished way into the dark. Completed it in under 8 hours ride time - good for me, slow for so many, many others. Lesson - be flexible.
#4 Mar 25 - 125 miles. New Orleans to Baton Rouge roundtripper on LA 61/Airline Hwy, a route most people say to avoid due to traffic (which doesn't bother me on that particular route). Not my fastest overall time, rolling average was ~15mph, but I had to make multiple "recovery" stops as my left knee is still healing from being whacked in an attack with a baseball bat.
#'s 5, 6 & 7 Apr 25, 26 & 28 - 103-107 miles, each under 9 hours. I need to find some audiobooks or small portable radio for the boring stretches.

Jan - first century

We completed Sunday's Case Grande Century in good fashion. Total riding time was about 5:42 for a 17.5 mph average. I wasn't overly pleased with the average but then again, the last 15 miles was dead into a 10-15 mph wind.

I rode with David on a Volae and Richard on a Carbent - both are good guys and fine riders. Davis is a strong rider and I think he does at least 10 centuries a year. I know that he did the 200-km high country brevet too - lots of climbing on that one. Both gave me a hard time to enjoying the rest stops a little longer than they would have liked but I begged and was granted forgiveness.

We're thinking about a 300-km brevet early next month. As I noted at the end of the ride yesterday, if we had another 20-25 miles to go for a 200-km, I wouldn't have an issue. I'm not sure about another 100-km though.

On the other hand, our pace at 100 miles yesterday was completely different than if we were attempting a 300. We did a few intervals and sprints to stress our legs a bit. David and I also egged each other on at times.

Everyone played well together. I suppose there were 200-250 riders in total on rides of three different distances. I didn't hear of any accidents and the sag wagons didn't appear to have any candidates that needed assistance.

Temps were in the mid-40's to the mid-60's. The lunch stop was at the 71-mile point. It was windy all day as predicted and even more pronounced going into Case Grande and esp. on the last 15 miles into Chandler.

A fine day, a good route and a great group of riders.

I am now in this club versus the century a month due to a cycling accident that managed to ruin my February century :-(

I'm planning on being back on track for March and it looks like that will require my first century in the rain ;-)

March Century Completed today 100.05 miles (actually more because I forgot to restart my cyclo-computer after one rest-stop).

This was a nice rolling Century through Pike county and I am more than pleased with 7h17m completion time (5h57m34s time on bike).

Contemplating a Mountain Climbing century for next month.

I suppose that brevets can count towards century rides?

February 4, 2012 - 300k
March 10, 2012 - 400k

I'll do another 200k on Saturday.

My concern was more the legitimacy of one long brevet covering several rides that are tracked here! Thanks!

I'm not in the running for the Century-a-Month Club (at least this year), but I got in my first century of 2012 yesterday. Maybe if I can get on track, it'll be a possibility next year.

Daniel's Updates through March

January Total Miles 584.9
January's Century

February (Hit by dog, Recurrent mechanical failure, thus no century) Total Miles 337.5
Longest Ride of Feb 35miles

March Total Miles 772.3
March Century - Tour de Pike

I am looking forward to my next century in April, the Wheel O'Fire in Hamilton Georgia on April 14th. There will be some climbing on this Century. I am still working toward being in shape for the Six Gap Century in September (but I'll admit to being really nervous).
