2013 - Long Distance Cycling Goals

Got any long distance cycling goals for 2013?

Maybe something in the Randonneuring world? A 24-hour race? The Century-A-Month? The RAAM?

Because we have no idea where we'll be or what we'll be doing in 2013 ... we're still on our Round-the-World tour until the end of January, and then ??? ... my goals aren't too extensive.

1. I would like to ride a 200K, 300K, and 400K. I'd be thrilled if I could finish a 400K again.

2. At least one 1000-km month would be nice.

3. Ride more than I did in 2012.

4. I would love to do another 24-hour race, but finding one that fits our schedules for this year would be the bigger challenge. There are no 24-hour races in Australia, at least not like the ones in the US. So this one might have to wait for another year.

Last year I fizzled out after (actually during) a 400k; I think it was post PBP letdown. I'm pretty energized for 2013 so here's my tentative year. Of course all plans are tentative.

200k and 400k brevets in Ohio
National 24-hour Challenge, improving on last year
1000k LOL to finish requirements for a Randonneur 5000 award
600k in MN
Permanents as needed through November to complete an R12 (1 down, 11 to go)

I'd like to fit a 300k in there to complete a SR, but right now I don't see a fit.

I intend to complete the SoCal King of the Mountains Century Challenge (3 centuries with 13k, 12k and 8k of climbing), and to improve my time in stage 1 from last year's 11:52 to something less pathetic.

Did one 200k in October, so either 300k or a double century would be a must.

Completed 6 centuries this year (two more days left so I may yet go for 7); hoping to make it one a month next year.

Bessie creek , https://bessiescreek24.com/ Is close enough for me to ride my bicycle to the event . . other than that I need to learn more about cycling nutrition and loose weight. You may get a chuckle out of this but last week, after a good warm up, i did a personal best of four miles in 15 minutes on the trainer. With a garmin 500 for Christmas some new winter cycling cloths i am ready to avoid ( hee hee) the elements on the trainer

The fantasy ride ( but cost prohibitive )- the Grassland 1200k in inner Mongolia or the 1200k out of Mumbai. The more likely ride- Taste of Carolina 1200k with my SR in Colorado. Maybe the Double-Triple Bypass too. Not bad for an old Fart.

I wanna ride a 200k, STP one-day, and RAMROD on the tandem with my wife. Yes, I'm certifiable. We'll probably never be stronger than we are this year, so it's go for it time. I'm sitting here, legs hurting after only 55 miles and 3200', so we have a ways to go. That's a third of a RAMROD, though, and it's still December.

-California Triple Crown Stage Race
-Century per week
-Century in at least 3 new states
-Century in a new country

It's looking to be a busier year off the bike, so I hope I can squeeze it all in.

For me, it's get more centuries in than 2012 and to ride my first 600k. Longer-term goal is to get in good enough shape that my conditioning won't be a problem for PBP 2015.

1. stay alive, unless or until the other is the better option,
2. have fun.

I've done pretty well keeping to those goals: currently R-29 & P-12 (also C-34 & M-46). SR in 2011 (life got in the way in 2012). 9200+ miles each of the last two years. 10K+ RUSA kms in 2012. No BIG rides planned (meaning nothing over 600k) & no tours expected in 2013.

I'd like to complete a 300k. So far I've done a bunch of Populaires and a single 200. The 200 took me about 10:30 so on that basis I'd hope to be able to do a 300 in 20 hours or less. I'd also like to take in a few more 200s, and maybe some more grimpeurs. I might even have another go at the Tour Of The Hills which was a huge sufferfest for me last year but gave me such a sense of accomplishment when I crossed the line with 15 whole minutes to spare.

I will aim for at least one century ride every calendar month (I did 11 centuries in 9 months last year) and a total of at least 6,000 km for the year (about 7,200 km last year). I also aim for 100 km per week, but that can be difficult at times with travel schedules and work deadlines. I only did one brevet last year and would like to try a couple this year.

Any tricks to getting in? I understand they only take 750 riders, and I would imagine A LOT more than that would be applying during the 2-hour registration window this Saturday!

Big goal of the year is to set a 60+ record in the fixed gear category of the Furnace Creek 508.

Plan B is to set the 60+ record in the fixed gear category of the Hoodoo 500. That's if I don't get my entry to the 508 accepted. If I do, then Plan B becomes Plan A for 2014. I think they are too close together to do a decent job on both in the same year.

Why limit your self to the 60+ record? Go for the overall. Actually, that's a pretty strong record. btw, you'll get into the 508. I don't think he really denies any entries.

I'm going to be a crew chief for a two man RAAM team in June. I've raced it and officiated so the only thing left is to crew. On the bike I'll also probably do a brevet series and the 508 and Hoo doo too.

aiming for my sixth consecutive year of century a month, with a goal of at least 18 centuries for the year; I'll hit my 100th lifetime century (first one was in Sep 2007) sometime this summer. Also at least one 200km ride, maybe more than one.

I'm also thinking of doing 5 centuries back to back on a tour down to Virginia via New Jersey/Delaware this summer (total mileage is 575 miles), trying to ride real light; I also am planning a 1200 mile tour from Minnesota to upstate NY via Wisonsin, Michigan, Ontario.

Awesome!

I'm joining a regional Brevet club and planning on a 200,300,and 400 this year. May the force be with us!

1) Complete my third (or is it fourth?) SR series
2) Ride the Gold Rush Randonnee (1200k out of Davis CA)

Given how the last couple years have gone, this'll be challenge enough.

I forgot to mention in my other post that I plan to do my first fixed-gear century and 200k this year. We'll see how that goes.
