Say What?

What funny/memorable things have you heard someone say said mid-race?

"Back when" a teammate and I had just barely managed to bridge the gap to what would "the move" of the day.
The big dogs eased a tad to look each other over, I was deciding when/how much to puke when my teammate rolled up next to me and said:

"We've got us where they want us now!"

I'm afraid that most of the comments I heard while racing - whether as a competitor or official - wouldn't get past the forum censor. We supposedly polite Brits can be surprisingly coarse.

We did have a kid on our team who often did the commentary on the races he wasn't riding in. He was good at it, and often worked in some amusing phrases, comments about riders he knew etc. One day a notoriously one-paced diesel of a Cat 3 went off the front, and our commentator broadcast "there goes Ian T.... making one of his trademark slow-motion attacks."

The PA system was pretty loud. We had to protect the lad from Ian T... at the end of the race.

No doubt: profanity, verbal abuse & sandbagging are 99% of verbal "communication" in a race in the states.
My teammates were always good for something memorable.

I was suffering ( as usual ) like a junkyard dog in August toward the end of race when a teammate nodded at my jersey pocket and said:
" Are you going to eat that banana? "
It's hard to laugh and gasp for breath simultaneously but I managed it.....

I used to ride in a touring group that featured a really wonderful couple. He had huge experience as a racer back in the 50s and 60s, and won numerous state indoor and road titles.

He came up next to me on a long climb one day and engage me in a conversation. The questions he asked weren't ones that could be answered with single words such as "yes", "no", "uh-ha", in between heavy breathing, but required some explanation (ie, open rather than closed questions).

He much later explained that it was a useful tactic in racing -- the question that required a long answer. The thought process for the victim could be enough to put them off their rhythm, and that was when he would pounce.

Nice!

We would have been quite immune to such high minded sophistry "back when".
I was blessed w/ teammates incapable of any thought process mid-race beyond verbally slagging-off others, singing " 99 bottles of Beer" and/or reciting filthy limericks if the pace slackened to accommodate the un-fit/sprinters: "There was a young lady from Dallas......."

It should not be necessary to point out that we were not Rhodes Scholars.....
