102 miles today on the tourer. My legs are destroyed, but tomorrow is chilling with some friends, I'll be fine after a rest day.
Spent some extended periods today in the IAB position. May sound a bit odd, doing that on a loaded tourer, but actually the load and the long wheelbase make it a phenomenally stable bike, ideal for confidence-building.
Anyway, with two big panniers on the back the bike has all the aerodynamic efficiency of a barn door, so I didn't expect the IAB thing to make much difference. How wrong I was! It radically decreased my level of effort to maintain a constant speed. So being active in this thread has taught me something.
Looks as if posting here might turn out to be expensive, though. I too am now wondering about a TT bike...

Made rides yesterday and today, heat was up to 95° both days during the ride, no wind what so ever and 85%+ humidity made it a great workout. Great to be back to riding. Mileage goes up next week.

Hi,
While Racer Ex was getting a silver in the TTT I was getting dropped 6 miles into the race. Never got on top of my breathing and was having difficulty towards the end of the first long straight. The lead rider surged a bit after I pulled near the top of a rise just before turn 1 and I popped. They made the corner without me and I yelled. They slowed and looked back but not enough that I could get back on. They looked back again and that was that. I don't blame them for not waiting, as I've been part of a trio that has left the 4th. First time that I've ever been dropped during a TTT and it's not fun. Finished the course for training if nothing else.
A little hill work today after the Indy 500. Two maybe three crits tomorrow and Tuesday night worlds after that.

Let me douse that fire with a bit of petrol. I did two 20 minute intervals on the TT bike yesterday, using a route group rides do all the time. The good paceline groups do this area at about 30mph. Using HR to try to peg my FTP (no PM on the TT bike yet) I did the section at around 32mph. Crack indeed.

Actually, doing without food (or, more especially, drink) for a while is exactly what is required. On the basis of what I eat I ought to look like Bradley Wiggins. So it looks as if it's the wine allowance that needs to be spent on the TT bike. Sigh.

Noooo, not the wine allowance!!! I thought about the food loss and realized I am doing this on purpose as a good bicyclist should so I can race age groups here. Wiggo does look like a bit if a scarecrow now.

You funny
It doesn't take much to skew an MPH number outdoors; slight downhill, tailwind, Etc. Yesterday we had a 4 minute section where we honked along at 36 MPH...uphill. It's why comparing TT times and the like can be sketchy and why I don't freak out if my time is slow...unless of course I get beat.
What's certain is a good TT bike is nasty fast. There's nothing that gets me grinning like seeing people in cars looking over at me with that "holy ****!" expression when I appear in their window.
BTW "the girl that beat me" apparently is kicking a bit of tail.

Long chat with the coach today about motivation. It's really difficult at times to have opportunities placed in front of you and not pursue them. But there's a big difference between really wanting to pursue them and going "well, there's a race I could win so I guess I might as well go". If you miss on the former it's often even more motivation to work harder. If you miss on the latter it leaves a sour taste and demotivates.
You need to avoid the latter. It's a lesson I've been able to impart but can miss myself.

Racer Ex,
Congrats on the TTT and sorry to hear about your wife's dinged-up wheel. Hope she heals soon.
All the talk about TT bikes is pouting me up. As tempting as it is, 10 minutes on the bike would likely set me back 10 days.........effen leg.
Wild Rockies SUPER D
Only about 7 Cat2 starters with a course that had me thinking that, I should in fact, take up knitting. Managed to get thru the scary & steep rock garden, only to crash at the bottom. Got back on, made up some time during the climb, and finished 3rd.
After doing it once, I'm looking forward to the nx one.
Hope you all are having a great Memorial Day weekend.

I went with some faster teammates to pre-ride this. They were kind to me the first loop, so we set out on loop #2 and I turned around at the top of the first climb. I have some work to do to even be able to finish 2 loops. I have no expectations of placement.
OTOH, it's a beautiful ride, so if any of you are free June 23, you'll be tested and rewarded on this loop. My snail's pace today ensured I had plenty of time to gawk and sight-see. Next month, not so much.

RR, Glad you are doing Pesky. We will be working registration. It is a very hard course with lots of places to attack. I think the hardest part will be Haskins Hill. My suggestion is to find a local hill similar to Haskins and do some hard efforts on it. Stage Road has some bumps and depending on the wind can be tough as well. However, if you are ready for Haskins, Stage Road should not be a problem. Also, work on descending skills and look at some videos on how to handle hairpin turns. There are some very technical sections on Stage Road and the descent right after the Haskins climb is very fast and somewhat technical. We have course marshals at all the difficult corners and intersections plus we inspect the course before the start. However, conditions can change so be on guard for dirt/gravel on the tight corners.

Racer Ex, We have a real pony here. Forget masters track or road, I checked the times and speeds from Elite Track Nationals last year where you and I competed. Your 50+ 4K pursuit team that set a National Record for the 4K at 4:40:08 calculates to a speed of 32.3 mph, 17.3 second lap times using 4 of the best 50 plus racers in the USA. AZT was at FTP for 20 minutes doing 32 mph. If we put him at z5 he would beat your team easily and he would have lapped you in the individual 4K pursuit. Plus I think he easily wins 55 to 59 road TT masters nationals as well.

Sorry to hear about your wife, Ex. Hopefully you both now have the injuries out of the way, and you can rearrange plans so it works out well. Sucks to have plans messed up, but sometimes new plans are even better.

nacler22, Nice result. I am amazed how much the mountain and cross racers crash and come out somewhat unscathed. You guys must be tougher.
