Symfony IOL lens

Seems like you got pretty good results with the Symfony, awesome to hear that your experience has been pretty much positive. Although I am glad there is a remedy to having cataracts I'm really worried about how my vision will end up afterwards; also which IOL lens I should choose.

Symfony seems like the obvious practical choice to choose for me because I am really young and love the idea of having more range with the Symfony and being less dependent from wearing eye glasses vs monofocal. However I'm a bit hesitant to choose that option because every where I read online it seems like halos/glares/starbursts are almost guaranteed with the Symfony where many others are wishing they'd rather have gone with a monofocal.

Along with halos/glares I am hearing there is an additional visual effects of having several concentric circular rings around bright lights at nighttime. Was wondering If happen you see any of those? Not halos but more like multiple refractive circles that reflect off of bright lights due to the design of the IOL lens. Am a bit worried about that effect as well because I would like to still have some freedom and capabilities to go out at night time into cities and driving into countryside backroads but fear if those issues make it dangerous for me to do some of those things maybe it be safer to go with a basic monofocal lens.

I know ultimately I have to make he decision for myself. Just a very difficult one

I can't really say whether the Symfony lenses were worth the extra cost, because I don't know what the monofocal lenses would have been like.

I do need reading glasses, so although the near vision has improved post op, it never became a no-glasses level of good. However for intermediate & far vision, I'm now 20/20. It's pretty incredible really. I can't complain. For most of human existence, I would have gone blind.

Shortly after my surgery, I watched a documentary on the Himalayan Cataract Project. The moment where people had their post op bandage removed and realized they could see- magic! I made a donation in honor of my eye surgeon

@SwayLocks, I had halo/glare prior to surgery that made it really difficult to see at night. What I have now is noticeable but not a problem. I can see well to drive, I can read signs at night, etc.

I can't say I noticed the concentric ring thing. But I haven't spent too much mental energy trying to find the words to describe my night vision. Until you asked, actually, I wouldn't have even really thought about the haloes to comment on them. It seems pretty minor to me, compared to pre-op when any point source of light at night looked like a big giant sphere and made it really hard to make things out.

I know, though. It's a big decision and one of those things that you want to gather lots of info on. Totally understandable.

A month ago my wife stated that the carpeting in our bedroom is original from when we built the home in 2000. She suggested we install 3/4" hardwood similar to the rest of the first floor and carry it into the master bedroom including walk ins. That sounded reasonable since it's only 220 square feet of flooring to install. After purchasing then letting the boxes of flooring breathe for two weeks I pulled out the carpeting and installed the hardwood. The only tricky part was the transitions to existing hardwood and three to the bathroom tile flooring. I was able to take extra flooring and fabricate the transitions with a table saw so we saved a couple bucks there.

I did the job too well as we now needed a new bed which is a king size, meaning new bedding and coverings too. We finally got the new bed(s) that are really two hospital beds side by side with a metal Arhaus frame around the outside. Oh, did mention that we needed to paint the walls too? And we also needed a new flat screen tv to fit in the antique wardrobe.

I think I'm done with the bedroom for now, but I have a sneaky suspicion that in the new future we will need new curtains too. Believe it or not the bed room upgrade cost more than my most expensive bike and wheels combined!!!

Hey, AJ, you seem handy with floors. Can I convince you to come out here and pull out my carpeting, remove the linoleum above my hardwood floors and restore them? I'll take you to Hellyer and pay for a rental bike for you.... Seems fair. Right?

Thanks for the offer Sara but I'll have to pass this time. Most of my handyman work at home originates with "you better or when you get the chance...." Of course there is also the more subtle approach of "when do you plan to...": Today's honey do list includes replacing a exterior GFI outlet near the front door so my wife can plug in a lighted plastic pumpkin for the trick or treaters and making the pole light in the front yard work again prior my wife's bunco group's next outing. I'm hoping the pole light is connected to the GFI circuit or the electric eye is kaput. Those would be the simple fixes rather than hand digging a trench 60' through the front yard.

We want to replace the hardwood we have, which is natural oak. When we bought the house we added hardwood to the bedroom, it was quite a process to get it installed right and stained to match, we ended up in the guest room for two months.

Replacing all the flooring means we have to move all our furniture...living room, dining room, Etc.

I received a shipping notice from Verizon and my iPhone X is on the way. However, they cannot deliver it before Friday which is when the phone officially goes on sale in the Apple stores.

My iPhone 6 is down to about eight hours of battery life these days. A new phone may be in offing about February. But not an iPhone X, that's a little too nice for me to shove in a plastic bag so I can stuff it in a jersey pocket. I like the Galaxy Note 7, too, but once again - too nice! Enjoy that phone, @Hermes!

More Chores/Home Repair Intervals today. I found termite damage in one of the boards surrounding the garage door. I spent about an hour removing trim and then ripping that damn big board out. No termites in it, I hope they vacated without going further into the garage. It already needs a roof, I don't need to have to take care of termite repairs on top of that. Home ownership. I need my very own AJ. Or Mr. HP. Or Racer Ex!

Luckily, my iPhone 5i is still chugging along. I'll probably keep it until the iOS update overwhelms its computing capability. That's what happened with my iPhone 4. I'm resisting going to a larger phone; the 5i is just about the right size.

I upgraded to the iPhone 6 several months ago. I don't want to be cutting edge to the point were my son's can't help resolve phone issues. The iPhone 5S I had worked well and had good battery life but only a couple gigs of space for all my apps and images due to iOS taking up the majority of the data dump.

I am shedding a tear for the flooring pain. I will send you guys a bouquet of flowers.

The implant for my new tooth was installed yesterday. I was looking for a verb that captures the experience and install was the best I could come up with. The installation (oral surgery under local antithetic) took about an hour. The procedure is open the upper right gum to expose the bone. Measure and mark where the implant is to go. Drill a small pilot hole in the bone and drive, using a hammer, a pin into the hole. The hammering is an interesting experience. I asked the doc if he needed to put a sledge hammer on the top of my head to act as a backstop to generate more force.

Once the pin is in place, a panoramic X-ray is taken to show the depth of the pin and its relationship to the depth of the bone before one enters the sinus cavity as well as the location and degree of straightness of the hole. I told the doc the pin looked perfect to my eye. This is where skill of the surgeon is key. Drilling a perfect hole in the right spot perfectly straight is both skill and talent. Think Michelangelo.

The pin confirms the size of the implant to be used. Next the pin is removed and the hole enlarged such that the implant which has threads can be screwed into the bone. The implant is first screwed in by hand and then using a tool with a ratchet, the implant is tightened until it is in place.

Another panoramic X-ray is taken and the position of the implant is checked again for relative location straightness and depth relative to the sinus cavity. It was in perfect position.

The gum was then sutured closed and I return to the doc on Monday for a checkup.

It takes about 3 months for the bone to grow around the implant. Once successful, another surgery is done to open the gum and place an abutment on the implant. The abutment protrudes from the gum and offers a base for the dentist to place a crown and voila a new tooth is born.

I had some pain yesterday that was managed with tylenol. This morning as I write this, I do not have any pain.

This is one of my favorite dentists clips - Dudley Moore: actor, pianist - RIP

Congrats Hermes on the hardware. Good thing your dentist has carpentry/mechanical skills.

The flooring experience is just one of many similar in my life. For instance, last winter we discussed how medium stained oak kitchen and butler pantry cabinets are so dated and that we should paint the wood cabinets white. Just like all home fixer-upper shows do that we watch. We decided that the cabinets and doors needed washed with TSP, apply a primer then two finish coats of paint. We also decided that all the doors and drawer faces would be removed and painted in the basement. Once we finished painting and reinstalling the doors and drawer faces we then updated the under and over-cabinet lighting to the new LED lights. Work started and everything went as planned except my wife decided to visit our son and daughter-in-law in order to babysit our 5 month old granddaughter during the construction. Our daughter in law went back to work and they had a two week period waiting for a daycare opening to come about. One of my wife's justifications for scheduling the work at that time was that when we tear the kitchen apart she would not be able to cook.

It's good to know your grandson has your back.

I got a solid nine hours of sleep last night, in contrast to the previous night's lousy sleep. I got up about the same time as the grandkids. My grandson is your basic noisy six-year-old.

Daughter: "Quiet down, old people like your Paw-Paw don't like noise in the morning."

Grandson: "Paw-Paw's NOT old!"

Nine hours of sleep in one setting is impressive! you are disqualified from being old. I think most old people sleep in shifts that includes some during the daytime.
