I did another 30 minutes today, this time from home, endurance pace; 28 hrTSS, .71 IF. I felt really good, actually got my HR up into my climbing repeat range for ~ a minute. Tomorrow's workout calls for 3x5 minute low Z4 intervals, five minutes RBI, within a 45 minute endurance ride.

My coach wants me to do these by HR and RPE rather than power. I'll test in about three weeks to find out where I am power-wise. I'm really curious as to how much power I've lost.

I told her that my tentative plan is to do a local stage race over the July 4 weekend...and emphasized that it was tentative; I wanted to have a short-term goal to work towards. Before the crash, we had discussed working on improving my FTP, so that's also an option, and not necessarily to the exclusion of race preparation...or is it? We'll discuss that when we talk. We'll talk tentatively on Friday; she emailed me from the hospital where she was nursing her husband, who had had a pretty bad mountain bike crash and will be operated on Wednesday. Everybody's crashing! If she's too busy nursing hubby, we'll just talk next week.

23 mile with 1509' gain 'club' ride that was cut short by lightning and rain.

TSS 107
IF 0.81

Legs are telling me they are tired. Day 6 of being back on the bike and a total TSS of 1081.

I promised the legs they can have Friday off.

sum total of 40' of tempo on monday, and 2h of endurance today...outside. HR was normal during each. 2 weeks post-op. yay!

i am likely to have some setbacks and tough days, but today and yesterday were really fun days and reminded me that things will come back. it can be a bit draining to always search for the good during recoveries.

25% of those were in Z2 on Sunday alone. Performance Manager Chart in Golden Cheetah has an upward trend for the acute training load . I'll let it dip some the next 7 days... or so I tell the team leader

There are lots of ways to increase FTP. Some can have a negative effect on race prep and some may not. It depends. At any rate it's a long ways from July, and your focus should not be on what you might have lost, but what you need to do right now.

shovel - Understood. Right now I'm focusing on enjoying being back on the bike. I'm looking forward to discussing the way forward with my coach. I was hoping to be able to get out of Cat 5 this summer. It's looking like I may have to race in <cough> Texas <cough> to be able to do that.

The way out of Cat5 is to just show up and race. FTP has nothing to do with it. Cat5 is your free pass to try anything and everything in order to figure out what can win you races and what you need to focus on. Cat4 isn't going to be any less sketchy than Cat5 except maybe at the front, so there is no good reason to get out of Cat5 other than your own ego.

Was discussing this with a Coach this past Sunday. Her advice... to not get out of CAT5 until you get comfortable with all(!) the skills needed to master the art including tactical.

Well I would not advocate staying past your ten but I would suggest that you have a plan for your final few races as a Cat5 and to do them all before upgrading.

It is draining to always look for the good and frustrating to find what you had lost but it will come back. I'm on round two of coming back ...

You're most likely not going to learn tactics in Cat5 unless it's part of a clinic. Not much in Cat4 either. But if you understand the concepts then it is the perfect place to try.

So If I may ask...

How would you define the tenure one should stay in CAT5?

IMO, racing is highly influenced by local races, teams, clinics and programs. Our racing club has a Cat 4 development team that does a great job of training racers to race as a team. They train together and have a team director. Each race they have a race plan going into the Cat 4 race. And they have done pretty well but more importantly racers have learned racing tactics and have had more fun racing.

I raced in a stage race as a Cat 5 and one of the clubs showed up with 5 racers that raced as a team and their GC designee won. This was orchestrated by the club leadership and the Cat 5 racers received expenses and etc.

As I remember, I did about 15 races as a Cat 5 that included time trials that do not count as mass start races. And it was at a time that we had some terrible crashes in the Cat 4 fields and the NCNCA decided to make the upgrade harder from 5 to 4.

I had a lot of fun racing with the Cat 5 men and by observation found there were less crashes in Cat 5 than in the larger fields of the Cat 4. At that time, Cat 5 fields were limited to 50 racers and many times we had mentors that rode with the racers. I did a crit as a Cat 5 and we rode the course flawlessly with a couple of mentors and the Cat 4 men had 4 crashes and it took them a longer time to finish.

We have races that have 45+ Cat 4/5. Those tend to be better races than the open Cat 4 since they are comprised of older racers just starting versus racing in the open 45+ or 55+ that may be too fast for newer racers.

Ten finishes, like the rule book says. No more no less, unless you are one of the very fortunate to have a situation like Hermes describes. From what I have seen that is very rare. We have had guys in the clinic at Bethel stay at Cat5 past their ten just so they could finish the clinic.

shovel - This is my concern. I wanted to get my ten mass start races in before I get into my third year of racing. FTP is a separate issue.

Injuries have a way of adjusting timelines. That's a great goal though.

i tend to be very upbeat and positive, and i know deep down that i will always return, stronger than i was before (in a sense it is nice to have seen this happen from various injuries in the past), but every once in a while i feel drained from having to fire myself up.

true. it's good to have a plan but it is also good to recognize that one's body may alter that plan.

You are human after all, tr. Seriously, your attitude is really an inspiration, especially considering the bad run you have had.

+1
I've had some **** the last couple of years and have not been as upbeat as you, TR; your outlook is remarkable.

As an aside, every time I do whine about my injuries to a fellow 45/4, I learn that my general decrepitude is merely the norm.

Tried - that is "tried" - to do the assigned sprint intervals today after the ATOC start (I was all sorts of inspired). Nada. It was way. Too. Hot. My legs just shut down, and I had a heckuva time riding home. I'm not used to heat and I just cannot perform in it. I hope it's a little cooler tomorrow when I do the mock TT drills.
