You don't need an immaculate drivetrain to make me feel inadequate, you just need to be able to see your abs. Anyway, now @IBOHUNT has alerted me to the fact that I should be putting my groupsets in the dishwasher, greasy drivetrains are consigned to history. :p

Well, I do clean the chain and cassette up a bit in my parts washer before I put them in the dishwasher.
Still, make sure you get to the dishwasher before the spousal unit. Hell hath no fury ...

Hermes 12-05-15 10:18 AM

Cleave takes his drive train to Boeing and they clean it or he uses a new cassette each time he rides.

Now now...

:)

I came back for this kind of abuse? :notamused: :D

I recently taught my wife how to finish cleaning her chain with a toothbrush and rag. I do the initial lubing and rough cleaning. However, if I actually published my thorough (versus regular) chain cleaning process on this forum I'd never hear the end of it.

Cleanliness is supposed to be next to something important. Campagnolo cassettes clean up nicely regardless of age except for the cheapest Veloce cassettes. That's the beauty of Italian versus Japanese parts. I do use a Japanese chain on my race bikes though.

On the race front, I will be at Piru tomorrow morning without teammates so I have no excuse for not finding Heathpack. Easy club ride today as I want to be fresh enough to also use tomorrow as an FTP test. I have no delusions about winning. :o

Oh, I've never tried putting bike parts in the dishwasher. Let me know how that works for you.

Hermes 12-05-15 04:44 PM

He puts them in the dishwasher but would never consider putting them in his still.

CX Race - Rocky Mtn Regional Champs (meaningless designation, but that's what the race is called) - SW4, 11th/22.

(edit - actually , i guess it really is a regional championship)

Fun course, lots of turns on wet grass some of which transitioned to slightly slippery mud, a little bit of parking-lot crit racing, a volleyball court (deep sand), a run-up with easy little barriers.

My dismounts went to hell b/c i fell during the pre-ride and then was un-confident, so I lost a lot of time on those. By the middle of the race i was trading off with two gals who were doing better at the skills, I was passing them on all the drag-races through the slow grass and they were passing me at the obstacles.

I fell in one of the slippery mud sections and had to put my chain back on, lost some time with that.

Fun race!

Sweet rig.

Racer Ex 12-06-15 10:36 AM

Nice pic! Seriously thinking about flat barring my cross bike. Our state championship is coming up and with most of our courses having almost no asphalt, having drop bars seems to be a waste. Better gravel bike as well.

i don't need Cleave's clean drive train to make me feel inadequete, I'm married <rimshot>

i clean my drive train with a tooth brush. You should see what that does to my teeth <rimshot>

Cleave rides the 5236. I don't why he takes the bus when he has all those bikes <rimshot>

My wife says until she gets a big ring, there's no riding <rimshot>

(why comedians seldom explore bike related topics)

I'll say!!! I envy your wheel set! What tires are you running? (I used that word in the proper context, nothing from peanut gallery, please ;) )

Great finish, VG!

Dec 2015 Piru 20k TT. Women's Cat 1-4, 2nd of 3, PR by 53 seconds, Windy!

Good race for me today at Piru in windy conditions, maybe 10 mph from the NE. The typical wind direction on this course is from the west and I had a game plan in my mind if the wind was from the west vs from the east. When I got to the course, I processed the wind correctly in my head as coming from the east but incorrectly that this was the "typical" direction. About 5 miles in, I realized my error but fortunately I had not gone out too hard. So on our out leg, we were going downhill with a tailwind and I got to the turn-around crazy soon. Kind of a slow turn, then on the way back there was construction on the road and I actually got a stop sign. We were told to let the promoter know our stopped time if we got stuck, I thought it was 20 seconds but looking at my data, it was 28 seconds. Close enough.

Return leg was uphill and into the wind with a fair bit of crosswinds. Tough. I was 13ish minutes out and 20ish minutes back. Still managed to ride pretty steady, negative splits and overall around 4 watts better than my previous best (hard to really compare though because of the construction stop).

PRed it by 53 seconds, which was awesome because all the experienced people were talking about how they were 1-3 minutes slower on more power. Only 45 seconds behind Nemesis, this is the first time I've been within a minute of her. There were three of us in the Women's 1-4 field but another 3 in the Public field. I had been kind of insulted because one of my local cycling friends had emailed me to "warn" me about one of the women in the Public field- just wanted to give me a heads up that she would be racing today. She is pretty experienced and was one of a 4-woman relay team who won Race Across the West this year, so not a slouch. She beat me by 1:30 in the first TT I ever did, Piru in June when I was on a road bike (she was too). But I've gotten faster since then and massively upped my game equipment-wise, I didn't really feel like I needed to be warned about her. Anyway, she was 35 min and something today. Beat her easily, I hope my helpful friend looks up the race results. :)

And got to meet and chat with @Cleave today. He has a very nice bike, I admired his cable routing. :)

So this is my last race of 2015. I started the year wanting to get a women's top 10 finish in the Planet Ultra King of the Mountain Series. Planet Ultra | Cycling Events and Tours » King of the Mountains Century Challenge Tough rides, I wound up with a women's 9th place finish, which I was very happy with. Although it could have been better.

Then @Racer Ex suggests I might like to try a TT. Match made in heaven there, good call. :) I rode my first one in June and have done a total of seven 20k's at this point. First place in three, second place in three and 4th place once. Totally happy with it, its been a very good year.

When I sign up for these things, they always ask the name of your club, but I don't have a club that has particularly helped me with any of these races. What I want to know is where do I get to put the name of my coach??! Because I truly could not have done any of this without him, in my mind this is a total team effort. So just worth mentioning that there are two of us in this together. Very grateful to my coach, @Racer Ex. :)

Jut to be clear: I did PR it with the stop. But my official time includes a 20 sec credit for the stop and when I say I PRed it by 53 seconds, I'm using the official time. Otherwise, the PR (including the stopped time) is approx. 30 seconds. Confusing, I know!

revchuck 12-06-15 04:01 PM

Regardless, it's still a PR. :)

LAJ 12-06-15 05:30 PM

Well done, @valygrl! Way cool pic. We have some good photographers here.

LAJ 12-06-15 05:31 PM

Very nice, @Heathpack!

LAJ 12-06-15 05:32 PM

@Racer Ex will be here all week.

Don't forget to try tonight's special, and please tip your waiters and bartenders.

valygrl 12-06-15 05:51 PM

thanks, all. I take no credit for the awesome picture, but happy to have been lined up like that.

The wheelset was from ebay, and was pristine. Running Clement MXPs because that's what my teammates and bike shop all told me were the best all around tire for here. I take no credit with knowing what I'm doing around that. :)
